The purpose of a Smoke Alarm is to give an early warning of an outbreak of fire! It is vital that you and your family know exactly what to do when the Smoke Alarm activates. 82% of fires resulting in fatalities had no working Smoke Alarm.

What types of smoke detectors are there?
There are two types of smoke detectors used in Ireland. These are

Ionisation Smoke Alarm: The cheapest and most common type. These are very sensitive to small particles of smoke from “flaming” fires like chip pans. It will detect this type of fire before the smoke gets too thick. Although most residential models are self-contained units that operate on a 9-volt battery, the building regulations now require installations in new homes to be mains operated, with a battery backup in case of a power failure.
Optical Smoke Alarm: More expensive type but more effective at detecting larger particles from “slow burning” fires such as smouldering foam or P.V.C. wiring.

What many smoke alarms do I need?
For maximum protection one smoke alarm per room (except bathroom, kitchen and garage). For minimum protection one smoke alarm for each level/floor of your home.

Where do I fit my smoke alarm?
On the ceiling as close to the centre of the room as possible.
Keep in mind your ability to hear the smoke alarm at night with the door closed.

When should I test my smoke alarm?
You should test your smoke alarm once a week. Heat detectors offer protection in areas such as kitchens, saunas and garages where the environment is dirty or smoky under normal conditions or where there is a high presence of airborne particles such as water vapour or exhaust fumes.

How do Heat Detectors work?
Heat detectors respond to the convected thermal energy of a fire. They operate at around 58oC or to a rapid rise in temperature. They are used in locations where it is impractical to install a smoke detector such as domestic kitchens, workshops, refuse storage areas and grain stores.

Remember

Have at least one Smoke Alarm (on the ceiling) on every level in your home

Test your smoke alarms at least once a week

Change the batteries every year

When the warning beep sounds change the battery immediately

Remember to replace your smoke alarm batteries

A smoke detector is a device that detects smoke.
