{"id":178,"date":"2016-11-28T14:55:10","date_gmt":"2016-11-28T14:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/monaghan.ie\/firebuildingcontrol\/?page_id=178"},"modified":"2025-02-05T12:52:41","modified_gmt":"2025-02-05T12:52:41","slug":"electrical-safety-in-the-home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/monaghan.ie\/firebuildingcontrol\/electrical-safety-in-the-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Electrical Safety in the Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Electrical appliances cause a large number of domestic fires every year.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that all electrical appliances are properly maintained and installed by a qualified person.<\/li>\n<li>Never overload electric sockets as it is a major fire hazard.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t run flexes under carpets or rugs where they can be damaged.<\/li>\n<li>Contact an electrician if cables are worn or damaged or simply replace the item.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid leaving them operating overnight. If you intend to leave them operating overnight then they should be in rooms separated from the escape route by a closed door.<\/li>\n<li>If the event of a fire turn off the power at the main isolation switch if this can be done safely without delaying the escape.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-180 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/monaghan.ie\/firebuildingcontrol\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2016\/11\/Overloadsocket2.jpg\" alt=\"overloadsocket2\" width=\"119\" height=\"163\" \/><br \/>\nNever overload electrical sockets<\/p>\n<p><strong>Electric Blankets<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure that your electric blanket has a British Standards Kitemark on the label.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that it has an overheat protector to prevent the blanket from overheating.<\/li>\n<li>Regularly check the blanket for wear and tear particularly the electric leads and plug.<\/li>\n<li>Never use a blanket that has damage or scorch marks on it.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the blankets dry and when storing for the summer roll them up to prevent creasing.<\/li>\n<li>If an electric blanket gets wet, dry it completely before using it again.<\/li>\n<li>Tie the electric under blankets to the mattress to prevent creasing.<\/li>\n<li>Adhere strictly to the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions.<\/li>\n<li>Never use hot water bottles and electric blankets together.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that all electric leads hang freely over the side of the bed.<\/li>\n<li>Unplug the blanket before getting into bed unless it is designed for all night use.<\/li>\n<li>Never use an over blanket under or an under blanket over.<\/li>\n<li>If in doubt about the condition of your electric blanket have it checked or replaced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wiring<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you notice any of the warning signs below, ask a qualified electrician to check your wiring.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-179\" src=\"http:\/\/monaghan.ie\/firebuildingcontrol\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2016\/11\/Overloadsocket.jpg\" alt=\"overloadsocket\" width=\"136\" height=\"124\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hot plugs and sockets.<\/li>\n<li>Fuses that blow for no obvious reason.<\/li>\n<li>Lights that flicker.<\/li>\n<li>Brown scorch marks on sockets, plugs and fuse boxes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Portable Heaters<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always position heaters so the back is against a wall and they&#8217;re facing the room. If possible, secure them to the wall to prevent them from falling over.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t place heaters near curtains or furnishings, and never use them for drying clothes.<\/li>\n<li>Leave your heater on the floor, not on a chair, kitchen counter, table or elevated surface. This makes the heater more susceptible to being knocked over and starting a fire.<\/li>\n<li>Leave your heater in a dry place.<\/li>\n<li>Switch heaters off if you&#8217;re not in the room, and also when you go to bed.<\/li>\n<li>Keep portable heaters away from draughts<\/li>\n<li>Never move a portable heater when it is in use.<\/li>\n<li>Never use a portable heater for drying clothes.<\/li>\n<li>Check flexes for signs of wear regularly and replace if necessary.<\/li>\n<li>Replace blown fuses with one of the correct rating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Electrical appliances cause a large number of domestic fires every year.
