Escape plans help you get out of your home quickly. In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for a house to fill with thick black smoke and become engulfed in flames.<\/p>\n<p>You should talk to everyone in your home about how you will get out if there is a fire. Make an escape plan for your house and put a reminder of what to do somewhere it&#8217;s easily and regularly seen &#8211; on the fridge door, for example.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-188\" src=\"http:\/\/monaghan.ie\/firebuildingcontrol\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2016\/11\/runningman.jpg\" alt=\"runningman\" width=\"207\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/monaghan.ie\/firebuildingcontrol\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2016\/11\/runningman.jpg 207w, https:\/\/monaghan.ie\/firebuildingcontrol\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2016\/11\/runningman-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Running man means of escape<\/p>\n<p><strong>Consider the following when forming your action plan<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Know your escape route. The best escape route is your normal route in and out of the home<\/li>\n<li>If possible plan two escape routes from each room.<\/li>\n<li>Practice the plan until perfected.<\/li>\n<li>Close all doors behind you as you leave.<\/li>\n<li>The stairs are your primary escape route \u2013 keep them clear.<\/li>\n<li>If your clothes catch fire \u2013 &#8220;Stop, Drop and Roll&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Do not re-enter the house for any reason &#8220;Get Out and Stay Out!&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Phone the fire brigade from a nearby outside phone.<\/li>\n<li>Decide on a meeting point outside the house near where the fire brigade is likely to arrive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the event of a Fire<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wake everyone up, get everyone together and get everyone out.<\/li>\n<li>Check doors with the back of your hand &#8211; if they are warm, don&#8217;t open them.<\/li>\n<li>If there is a lot of smoke, crawl along on the floor.<\/li>\n<li>If you have to break the window, cover the jagged glass with thick towels or bedding.<\/li>\n<li>Throw some bedding out of the window to break your fall.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t jump &#8211; lower yourself to arm&#8217;s length and drop to the ground.<\/li>\n<li>Dial 112\/999 from a mobile, a neighbour&#8217;s house or a phone box.<\/li>\n<li>Never go back into the building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-187 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/monaghan.ie\/firebuildingcontrol\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2016\/11\/Exit.jpg\" alt=\"exit\" width=\"214\" height=\"236\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember: Get out, stay out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Never go back into your home until told safe to do so by a Fire Officer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are trapped or can&#8217;t escape from a window&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you can&#8217;t escape, you will need to find one room to take refuge in &#8211; this is particularly important if you have difficulty moving around or going down stairs on your own<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Get everyone into one room and close the door.<\/li>\n<li>Put bedding or towels along the bottom of the door to stop smoke getting in.<\/li>\n<li>Open the window and stay near to it for fresh air and so the firefighters can see you.<\/li>\n<li>Dial 999 or shout for help so that someone else can phone for you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Practice your plan<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-186\" src=\"http:\/\/monaghan.ie\/firebuildingcontrol\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2016\/11\/Planyourescapenow.jpg\" alt=\"planyourescapenow\" width=\"182\" height=\"148\" \/>Make sure you have &#8220;walked through&#8221; the plan with everyone in your household.
