Events Archive 2016.<\/strong>
\nMonaghan County Museum have worked with a number of other groups and agencies to put together an exciting, inclusive, educational and fun programme of exhibitions, workshops, talks and tours to commemorate and remember this important centenary when the events of 1916 both at home and on the battle lines of Europe changed this county and country forever.<\/p>\n

Developed in partnership with Professor Terence Dooley, NUI Maynooth<\/strong>, who has written and researched the story of the exhibition.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The Era of Revolution Fashion Show<\/td>\nA Glimpse into the Past presents a historic fashion show, which showcases styles from 1840 \u2013 1919. More than just a fashion show, it is a glimpse into the lives and times of men and women from that era. The 1916 All Ireland Semi-Final and the Role of the GAA in Monaghan by Dr Donal McAllen<\/td>\nDr Donal McAnallen has been published widely on various aspects of the history of the GAA. He\u2019ll be exploring the intriguing story of the GAA, the 1916 All Ireland Semi-final between Monaghan and Wexford, and the Rising.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Monaghan 1916 – 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n

Official 1916 Rising Commemoration Event by Monaghan County Council<\/td>\n

This unique event, which has been planned in collaboration with various sections of Monaghan County Council including the Museum, Library, Arts and Heritage, will be held in front of the Courthouse in Monaghan Town. The day will include re-enactments with actors in Volunteer, Irish Citizen Army and British Army uniforms hosting interactive workshops where all visitors to the event will be able to interact with their history in a very real way.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Frank McNally is an Irish Times journalist, author and Monaghan native. He has covered a wide range of subjects for The Irish Times, including politics, sport, and literature. A former National Media Awards winner for his D\u00e1il and tribunal sketches; he is now chief writer of the daily Irishman’s Diary column.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Rebels, Priests and Politicians: the men and women of 1916 in County Monaghan<\/strong> by Prof Terence Dooley<\/td>\nProfessor Terence Dooley is also a native of County Monaghan and lectures at NUI Maynooth where he specialises in Irish social and political history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Professor Dooley also worked in partnership with Monaghan County Museum to research and develop their current exhibition \u201cWhisper to a Roar \u2013 Exploring the untold story of Monaghan 1916\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Music of 1916 <\/strong>by Eimear Quinn<\/td>\nEimear Quinn first achieved fame when she won the Eurovision Song Contest for Ireland in 1996 with her haunting rendition of The Voice. Since this remarkable international success, she has gone on to thrill and enthrall audiences throughout the world. Now resident in County Monaghan, the museum has invited her to deliver a night of music from this historic period in Monaghan and the nation\u2019s history.\u00a0 This once off concert will be a highlight of our programme of events commemorating the 1916 Rising.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Bealtaine Festival 2016 – <\/strong>Celebrating Creativity as We Age<\/td>\nWoodburning (also known as pyrography) is the craft of touching wood or leather with a heated poker to produce decorative burn marks, achieving a large range of decorative effects.\u00a0 Over four weeks participants will practice and gain familiarity with various woodburning techniques, design and plan a piece of pyrography art and use their new skills to create their final piece of work.\u00a0 This unique and highly enjoyable course will be led by local art tutor Samantha Hawe.\u00a0 Booking Essential<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Summer Camp Battlefield Archaeology Theme<\/strong><\/td>\nThis summer camp is suitable for children from 6 \u2013 12 year olds.\u00a0 All budding archaeologist will have the opportunity to get their hands dirty while having fun learning about archaeology of county Monaghan. This year\u2019s camp will focus on battlefield archaeology from the Stone Age to WWI.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Dr Lisa Butterly \u2013 Mental Health in time of War<\/strong><\/td>\nDr Lisa Butterly has carried out extensive research into the effects of war on the mind and in her presentation she will use the backdrop of the First World War and how many who survived the horror of battle had an entirely different and even more terrifying war to fight for their mental health when they came home.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Shane Martin Psychologist<\/strong><\/td>\nShane Martin, a Monaghan native, is a highly respected psychologist and celebrated author. He spoke in the museum during Positive Mental Health Week in 2015 on dealing with the loss and due to the incredible response to his talk we simply had to invite him back this year.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Dr David Murphy \u2018Monaghan and the Somme\u2019<\/strong><\/td>\nDr David Murphy is a lecturer in Military History at NUI Maynooth and specialises in the history of the Irish regiments who fought in the world wars. As part of our programme of events commemorating those people from Monaghan who fought at the Somme, David will take us on a march through the trenches of the Somme and bloody battles that were fought there.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
