Monaghan Sept 2018 Poster (PDF)

Monaghan has zero road fatalities to date in 2018

Figures released recently by the RSA show that A total of 87 people died on Irish roads up to the end of July this year, with Monaghan being the only county in which zero fatal traffic accidents were recorded.

This weekend will be another busy one on the roads as both Monaghan and Tyrone supporters will be traversing the county’s roads on route to Sunday’s All Ireland Football semi-final in Croke park. Supporters are advised to leave plenty of time for their journey and to never ever drink and drive.

Upgrade works to the Emyvale Road/ N2 to start on 21st May 2018.

Following a competitive tendering process, the contract for the construction of the N2 Phase 3 Road Realignment scheme between Corracrin and Emyvale has been awarded to Gibson Bros (Ireland) Ltd. Monaghan County Council signed a Contract with the contractor on Monday 14th May, 2018 to construct the project.

The scheme will entail the realignment of 3.3km of the N2 National Primary Road between Corracrin and Emyvale. The works will include the construction of a new widened carriageway, footpath, combined footway/cycleway, signage, roadmarkings, public lighting, road drainage works, safety barriers, landscaping and accommodation works.

Construction works will commence on Monday 21st May 2018, with the installation of Temporary Traffic and Pedestrian Management (TTPM) on the N2 carriageway. This will remain in-place for the duration of the scheme, a period of approximately 18 months. Every effort will be made to minimise any disruption or inconvenience to the local residents, businesses and community centres, and through-traffic.

The scheme has been an objective of Monaghan County Council for a number of years and with support and funding from Transport Infrastructure Ireland, (TII) and design by Consultants, Ove Arup & Partners Ireland Ltd, this objective can now be realised.

This scheme is a very important road improvement scheme for Monaghan and will significantly improve safety on the N2.

The overall N2 Monaghan to Emyvale Road Improvement project started in 2011 with the aim of improving road safety and travel quality on the existing N2 between Monaghan Town and Emyvale village. The project was undertaken in four phases to facilitate design, construction and multi-annual funding. The first phase was completed in 2011 and covered a distance of 1.5km between the townlands of Kilnadreen to Coolkill East directly north of Monaghan Town. The second and fourth phases were completed in 2014 and involved the easement/realignment and widening of 3.6km of the N2 between the townlands of Coolkill East and Corracrin. The current Corracrin to Emyvale phase, (phase 3) is the last section of these phased improvements.

Cathaoirleach Cathy Bennett welcomed the start of the works which will complete the improvement scheme which was commenced in 2011. Chief Executive Mr. Eamonn O’ Sullivan said that the project represented a major investment in the county’s road infrastructure. It would bring significant benefits on this busy stretch of road, which carries up to 8,000 vehicles each day, both in terms of safety for road users, and enhanced accessibility for businesses and visitors alike.

RSA Check it Fits Service

The RSA Check it Fits Service will be visiting Monaghan on 28th and Carrickmacross on 29th March.

The service is quick, it’s easy and it’s free. On the day experts will advise on how to fix any problem, demonstrate how to fit the restraint correctly and answer any queries participants might have. The experts aim to put parents, grandparents and guardians minds at ease that their child’s car seat is safely and securely fitted in their car.

Over 21,000 child car seats and restraints in Ireland were checked since 2013. Worryingly, 79% of seats required a major adjustment, of which 3% were deemed not fit for purpose and condemned, meaning they could have caused injury or even death in the event of a collision.

The dates and locations for the upcoming visit to Monaghan are:

Location Street Name Town Date Time
Fleming’s Supervalu Church Square Monaghan Wednesday 28th March 2018 10.00am – 5.30pm
