Culture Night 2020

Connect Through Culture/ Le Chéile Trí Chultúr

Culture Night is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts and takes place on the 3rd Friday of September. From 5pm onwards, cultural venues across the country stay open for everyone to come enjoy the unique experience of Culture Night, a free night of fun, entertainment and discovery.

Monaghan has a vibrant rich cultural community, and this is a great opportunity to sample the area’s cultural and creative offerings for free throughout the evening. The programme has been developing year on year and that is due to the cultural and creative community who partner with us.

For 2020, we were challenged with putting together a programme within the health and safety guidelines of Covid19. And our partnering organisations have truly stepped up to the mark and put together a blended programme which we hope everyone will enjoy. Most of our events this year will take place online, but we do have two events happening offline (see programme for more details).

We are delighted to have so many organisations involved this year again and we hope you enjoy exploring the rich cultural landscape of County Monaghan.

Due to ongoing Covid-19, events on Culture Night programme are subject to change/cancellation. We are committed to the health and safety of our participants and audience and appreciate your understanding of this matter.

Upskill with a Touch-Typing Course

Have you plans to return to education this Autumn? Does the thought of typing up a 2,000 word assignment fill you with dread?
Monaghan County Libraries are providing complimentary access to the TTRS Programme (Touch-type Read Spell) which will take you through a complete Touch-Typing programme. TTRS is also hugely beneficial to both adults & children as a tool to help with reading & spelling and is of particular benefit to those with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia (DCD) or ESOL.

Ballybay and Castleblayney Libraries to offer ‘Contact & Collect’ from 7th July

We are aware that there are lots of eager readers waiting for the branch libraries in Castleblayney & Ballybay to reopen. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience as we focused on preparing the larger branches for a safe re-opening. Work is now underway to make Ballybay & Castleblayney a safe environment for re-opening but in the mean time we can start with a ‘Contact & Collect’ service from next week. What this means is that you can contact the library and discuss your reading preferences. Library staff will then put together a selection of books for you to collect at a designated time in a safe, social distanced way.

‘Browse & Borrow’ hours now available in Clones, Carrickmacross & Monaghan

Monaghan, Clones & Carrickmacross Libraries have re-opened to the public to ‘Browse & Borrow’ but we’ve had to make some changes.
Over the past number of years we have worked hard to make our libraries Community spaces where people could come and spend time browsing our stock, using our computers, taking part in classes, bookclubs, Storytime activities & more, We have really missed seeing everyone over the past few months and we can’t wait for our doors to reopen to the public tomorrow BUT we have had to make quite a few changes. Alot of these changes mean that the libraries must be very functional places for the foreseeable future. Instead of inviting you in to spend hours in our libraries, we must ask you to stay no more than 30 mins. Instead of inviting you to make use of our PCs and Printers, we would ask you to use it only if necessary. Instead of making time to chat with you on the library floor and help you find exactly what you want, we will instead remain behind screens and offer directions and guidance on how to find items on your own. These changes won’t come easy to our Library staff who always strive to provide the best service possible but they are under strict instruction to follow Health & Safety guidelines which aim to keep both you and us safe. Please be patient.
Our Home delivery service remains in place, as does our Contact and Collect Service.

Browse and Borrow time will be from 2-5pm and 6-8pm on Mondays, 2-5pm from Tuesday to Friday.

Contact and Collect will be available from 10am – 1pm.

We hope to see you soon!
