The Irish Deaf Society www.irishdeafsociety.ie and Monaghan Deaf Group invites you and to the “Signs of Life” www.signsoflife.ie photography exhibition featuring images of Irish celebrities from the worlds of art, music, media, sport, and more, signing a letter of the Irish Sign Language (ISL) alphabet.
The series of twenty-six visual beautiful photographs, taken by a Deaf photographer, Johnny Corcoran, is the first of its kind in the world and is bringing ISL to Monaghan in a new and exciting way.
ISL is the first language of the Irish Deaf community and is used daily by more than 40,000 people. It is not officially recognised in this country meaning that many Deaf people struggle to access basic services. As part of the Irish Deaf Society’s 30th anniversary celebrations we are inviting the public to join us in celebrating this unique language and hope it will encourage interest in, and awareness of, Deaf culture around the county.
This free exhibition is interactive, fun, innovative and suitable for all ages with educational workshops planned that are aimed both at students and the general public.
Transition Year students also have the potential to take this language up as part of their Gáisce Awards. There is also a short ISL puppet show for the younger children where they can sing and dance along to Christmas songs.
