Events Archive 2016.
Monaghan County Museum have worked with a number of other groups and agencies to put together an exciting, inclusive, educational and fun programme of exhibitions, workshops, talks and tours to commemorate and remember this important centenary when the events of 1916 both at home and on the battle lines of Europe changed this county and country forever.

Thurs 10^th Mar 7:30pm	Launch of From a Whisper to a Roar – Exploring the Untold Story of Monaghan 1916 Exhibition	Using rare imagery, objects and film, our 1916 commemorative exhibition brings you back in time to a County Monaghan under British rule where the whisper of an Irish Republic exploded into a roar after the 1916 Rising. Developed in partnership with Professor Terence Dooley, NUI Maynooth, who has written and researched the story of the exhibition.
Fri 11^th Mar 7:30pm	Seachtain na Gaeilge	Come and join Monaghan Comhaltas for a great night of craic and ceoil to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge.
Easter at the Museum
Tues 22^nd Mar 11am – 5pm	Conservation Techniques	A paper conservation specialist will give a presentation showing how museum objects such as estate maps are restored and stabilised for posterity. This will include examples of items from the museum collection. Booking Essential
Weds 23^rd Mar 10:00am – 12:30pm 1:30pm – 3:30pm	Easter Arts and Crafts	These fun workshops will give everyone the chance to make their own Easter artwork. Booking Essential
Thurs 24^th Mar 11:30am – 12:30pm 2:30pm – 3:30pm	Easter Treasure Hunt	Bring the family along to enjoy this fun treasure hunt around the museum displays in search of those elusive Easter Eggs. Booking Essential
April
Thurs 21^st Apr 8:00pm	Women of 1916 by Dr. Mary McAuliffe	Dr. Mary McAuliffe is a Teaching and Research Fellow in Women’s Studies at the UCD School of Social Justice. She will be taking us through the turbulent and fascinating story of the many women who helped shape recent Irish history during the Easter Rising
Tues 26^th 7:00pm	The Era of Revolution Fashion Show	A Glimpse into the Past presents a historic fashion show, which showcases styles from 1840 – 1919. With over 20 costumes, funny sketches and entertaining historical insights this outstanding show is a hit wherever it appears! More than just a fashion show, it is a glimpse into the lives and times of men and women from that era. Using an unmatched collection of period costumes, the players bring a colourful cast of characters of life.
Thurs 28^th Apr 8:00pm	The 1916 All Ireland Semi-Final and the Role of the GAA in Monaghan by Dr Donal McAllen	Dr Donal McAnallen has been published widely on various aspects of the history of the GAA. He’ll be exploring the intriguing story of the GAA, the 1916 All Ireland Semi-final between Monaghan and Wexford, and the Rising.
Sat 30^th April 1:00-5:00pm	Monaghan 1916 – 2016 Official 1916 Rising Commemoration Event by Monaghan County Council	This unique event, which has been planned in collaboration with various sections of Monaghan County Council including the Museum, Library, Arts and Heritage, will be held in front of the Courthouse in Monaghan Town. The day will include re-enactments with actors in Volunteer, Irish Citizen Army and British Army uniforms hosting interactive workshops where all visitors to the event will be able to interact with their history in a very real way.

Thurs May 5^th8pm	Flying Columns: The revolutionary years as seen in the Monaghan Press by Frank McNally	Frank McNally is an Irish Times journalist, author and Monaghan native. He has covered a wide range of subjects for The Irish Times, including politics, sport, and literature. A former National Media Awards winner for his Dáil and tribunal sketches; he is now chief writer of the daily Irishman’s Diary column.
Thurs May 12^th 8pm	Rebels, Priests and Politicians: the men and women of 1916 in County Monaghan by Prof Terence Dooley	Professor Terence Dooley is also a native of County Monaghan and lectures at NUI Maynooth where he specialises in Irish social and political history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Professor Dooley also worked in partnership with Monaghan County Museum to research and develop their current exhibition “Whisper to a Roar – Exploring the untold story of Monaghan 1916”
Tues May 10^th 8pm	Music of 1916 by Eimear Quinn	Eimear Quinn first achieved fame when she won the Eurovision Song Contest for Ireland in 1996 with her haunting rendition of The Voice. Since this remarkable international success, she has gone on to thrill and enthrall audiences throughout the world. Now resident in County Monaghan, the museum has invited her to deliver a night of music from this historic period in Monaghan and the nation’s history. This once off concert will be a highlight of our programme of events commemorating the 1916 Rising.
Thurs 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th May 11am – 1pm	Bealtaine Festival 2016 – Celebrating Creativity as We Age	Woodburning (also known as pyrography) is the craft of touching wood or leather with a heated poker to produce decorative burn marks, achieving a large range of decorative effects. Over four weeks participants will practice and gain familiarity with various woodburning techniques, design and plan a piece of pyrography art and use their new skills to create their final piece of work. This unique and highly enjoyable course will be led by local art tutor Samantha Hawe. Booking Essential
Sat 21st May 12:30pm – 2pm and 2:45pm – 4:15pm	National Drawing Day	Participants will have an opportunity to release their creativity with innovative and unusual art activities. All will be revealed on the day…… Booking Essential
June
June 6th – 12th (Dates TBC)	Social Inclusion Week	Monaghan County Museum will once again play a central role in promoting social inclusion in County Monaghan through a dedicated programme of events that will run throughout the week.
Summer Fun
Sat 4th June 12:30pm – 1.30pm and 2pm – 3pm	Ceramic Painting	Colour Crazy Ceramics will encourage participants to express their ideas in a creative and fun way as they paint their ceramic piece. Booking Essential and Parental Supervision Required.
Sat 11th June 2pm – 4pm	Wet Felt Making	Design, pat, roll and squish! Discover the magic of wet-felting as participants guided by local art tutor Samantha Hawe, turn soft, fluffy wool into an amazing felted picture. All materials supplied – Just add imagination! The completed felted pictures are the perfect size for to be framed or used a coaster. Booking Essential and Parental Supervision Required.
Sat 18^th June 12:30pm – 2pm and 2:45pm – 4:15pm	Mask Making	This workshop will provide an opportunity to create a personal Venetian carnival mask using a variety of mixed media and learn about the history of these carnival masks. Booking Essential and Parental Supervision Required.
Sat 25th June 12:30pm – 2pm and 2:45pm – 4:15pm	Creative Beading – Jewellery Making Class	Let’s get creative with beads and bling! During this class, local jewellery designer Joy Hastings will guide participants in creating their very own piece of beaded jewellery. The class will cover basic jewellery making techniques and guide to matching colours. Each child will make something to take home and be proud of – Suitable for boys and girls of any age. July
Sat 16th July	16^th Country Music Festival	Following on for our hugely successful debut in the Monaghan Town Country Music festival in 2015, the museum staff are looking forward to going country once again in 2016 with a range of up and coming new singers performing in the museum gallery throughout the day
Mon 18th – Weds 20th and Mon 25th – Weds 27th	Summer Camp Battlefield Archaeology Theme	This summer camp is suitable for children from 6 – 12 year olds. All budding archaeologist will have the opportunity to get their hands dirty while having fun learning about archaeology of county Monaghan. This year’s camp will focus on battlefield archaeology from the Stone Age to WWI.
August
Tues 23rd Aug	Heritage Week Monaghan County Museum Friends Tour	As part of Heritage Week, the Friends of Monaghan County Museum will be hosting a tour of some of the main sites of the Rising in Dublin. To find out more and join the Friends, contact the museum.
September
Fri 2nd to Sun 4th Sept	The Museum gets the Blues!	Building on the great response the museum received as a new venue in the annual Harvest Times Blues Festival, we’ll see more musicians from around the world performing in the museum gallery throughout this fantastic weekend for Monaghan.
Fri 16th Sept 8pm	Culture Night	An evening of traditional song and storytelling by two of Ireland’s finest story tellers Len Graham and Jack Lynch.
October
Mon 10th Oct to Fri 15th Oct	Monaghan Positive Mental Health Week	Monaghan County Museum as a high profile community service has an important role to play in promoting positive mental health in the county and we continue that commitment in connection with the Monaghan Positive Mental Health Committee in 2016.
Tues 11th Oct 8pm	Dr Lisa Butterly – Mental Health in time of War	Dr Lisa Butterly has carried out extensive research into the effects of war on the mind and in her presentation she will use the backdrop of the First World War and how many who survived the horror of battle had an entirely different and even more terrifying war to fight for their mental health when they came home.
Fri 14th Oct 7:30pm	Shane Martin Psychologist	Shane Martin, a Monaghan native, is a highly respected psychologist and celebrated author. He spoke in the museum during Positive Mental Health Week in 2015 on dealing with the loss and due to the incredible response to his talk we simply had to invite him back this year.
This talk has been postponed. We apologise for an inconvenience caused	Dr David Murphy ‘Monaghan and the Somme’	Dr David Murphy is a lecturer in Military History at NUI Maynooth and specialises in the history of the Irish regiments who fought in the world wars. As part of our programme of events commemorating those people from Monaghan who fought at the Somme, David will take us on a march through the trenches of the Somme and bloody battles that were fought there.
Sat 22nd Oct 1pm – 3pm	Spooky Halloween Arts & Crafts	Brenda O’Reilly Hughes will facilitate a Halloween arts & crafts where participants can make something truly terrifying to take home. Booking Essential
Sat 29th Oct 1pm – 2pm and 2:30pm – 3:30pm	Pumpkin Carving/Painting	Learn how to carve your very own pumpkin with various designs. Booking Essential & Parent Supervision Required
November
Tues 1st Nov 10:30am – 12pm and 2pm – 3:30pm	Walking Tour of Monaghan Town	This is a unique opportunity to bring the family along and enjoy a walking tour of the town learning about some of the town’s buildings and monuments. Booking Essential
Weds 2nd Nov 11:30 – 12:30 (5-8 year olds) and 2pm – 3.30pm (9-12 year olds)	Drama Workshops	These interactive classes will give participants a fun introduction to drama. With games, improvisation and confidence building, lots of fun is guaranteed! Booking Essential

Weds 16th Nov 8pm	The Battle of the Somme	To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, Carol Walker Director of the Somme Association will give a presentation on the Battle and its aftermath. Other topics that will be covered in the presentation will include Home Rule and the Formation of the UVF, formation of the Ulster Division, Training and Recruiting.
