Every item has a story to tell and this flint blade, on the left, has been dated to between 5,500 and 4,000 BC making it the oldest man made object ever found in the county. That fact makes it clear that human habitation was established in County Monaghan in the Mesolithic or Middle Stone Age period c. 7,000 to 4,000 BC. Found in Annaghmakerrig Bog, near Newbliss, Co. Monaghan.
Axe heads, such as the example on the right were used for a variety of purposes including felling trees and this example, which was found in the north of the county, was made of flint. This axe probably dates to the Neolithic or New Stone Age period c. 4000 to 2,400 BC.
