Leaks can be caused by:
- Damaged pipelines, damaged connections and / or damaged fittings
- Worn valves
- Damaged ballcocks on water tanks or damaged cistern valves
- Corroded pipe work and tanks
Before hiring a Plumber we recommend that you check for leaks yourself. First of all, check the ground above your pipes. Does it look damper than the ground further away from the pipe?
One of the easiest ways to test for leaks is to carry out a “night use test”.
Step 1 Last thing at night turn off all equipment that uses water (and Do Not use any water during the night).
Step 2 Read the water meter at night and again first thing in the morning.
If the readings are not the same – then there is a leak.
If there is a leak – the next problem will be to find out where the leak is:
Step 3 Turn off the stopcock in the building.
Step 4 Read the meter last thing at night and again first thing in the morning.
If the readings are different – then the leak is between the meter and the stopcock.
If the readings are the same – then the leak is within the building.
If you find a leak – get it fixed quickly – this leak could cost you money.
- For businesses, industrial or farming consumers – a leak will mean higher Water Charges.
- Householders – if you do not fix a leak – you can be prosecuted.
- Leaks can also cause water damage to your property.
