Monaghan Ranked Among Ireland’s Cleanest Towns in 2025 IBAL Survey

The Diamond in Monaghan TownMonaghan has once again delivered an excellent performance in the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey, which reports a nationwide rise in cleanliness levels driven largely by improvements across Ireland’s towns and cities. The 2025 results place Monaghan among the cleanest towns in the country, with 28 towns achieving “clean” status this year.

Sligo claimed the top position in the national rankings, followed by Leixlip, Westport and Monaghan. The survey, carried out by An Taisce on behalf of IBAL, assessed 40 towns and cities nationwide.

Welcoming the results, Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, Cllr. PJ O’Hanlon, said:

“Monaghan’s continued strong showing in the IBAL rankings is a testament to the pride our community takes in its environment. This achievement reflects the hard work of local volunteers, Tidy Towns groups, businesses and our own Council staff, who work year‑round to keep Monaghan clean and welcoming.”

Chief Executive of Monaghan County Council, Robert Burns, also welcomed the findings, stating:

“These results demonstrate the value of sustained investment in our public realm and the strong partnerships we have built with community organisations across the county. Maintaining a clean and attractive environment is essential for quality of life, economic development and tourism. We remain committed to supporting initiatives that reduce litter, promote responsible behaviour and enhance Monaghan’s reputation as one of Ireland’s cleanest towns.”

IBAL highlighted the continued positive impact of the national Deposit Return Scheme, which contributed to a 10% reduction in cans and plastic bottles found during surveys. These items are now 60% less common than before the scheme’s introduction in early 2024.

Monaghan County Council acknowledges the ongoing commitment of local volunteers, community groups, businesses and Council staff. Their combined efforts continue to ensure that Monaghan remains one of Ireland’s cleanest and most attractive towns.
