New Chapter for Castleblayney as Market Square Project Moves to Construction

Monaghan County Council is pleased to announce the commencement of construction works this Summer on the Castleblayney Market Square Regeneration Phase II Project, a transformational initiative that will revitalise the historic Market House and surrounding public realm in the town centre.

The €14.6 million project is funded under the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht’s Rural Regeneration Development Fund, with match funding provided by Monaghan County Council.

Phase II of the regeneration project will deliver the refurbishment and repurposing of the former Castleblayney Market House into a vibrant public community building, incorporating a mix of cultural, retail, hospitality, and office uses, along with associated ancillary spaces. In tandem, the project will include significant improvements to the public realm across the Market Square area, enhancing accessibility, attractiveness, and usability for residents and visitors alike.

The construction contract is set to be awarded to Felix O’Hare & Co. Ltd., with works expected to begin in the coming months.

Robert Burns, Chief Executive, Monaghan County Council, said:
“This significant investment in Castleblayney reflects our ongoing commitment to regenerating our towns and strengthening local communities. The Market House is a landmark building of immense historic and civic importance, and its redevelopment will create a vibrant hub that supports cultural activity, enterprise, and social interaction. I am delighted to see this project move to construction stage and look forward to its positive impact on the town.”

Cathaoirleach Cllr PJ O’Hanlon added:
“I very much welcome the progression of Phase II of the Market Square regeneration and the significant funding that has been secured for Castleblayney. This is an important project for the town, and it reflects ongoing collaboration between local representatives and national funding bodies in supporting the development of our town centres”

Cathal Flynn, Director of Services, Monaghan County Council, said:
“This project represents a strong example of what can be achieved through effective collaboration between national funding bodies, the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Monaghan County Council, and our elected members. Their continued support and shared vision have been instrumental in bringing this ambitious regeneration project to construction stage, ensuring a lasting positive impact for Castleblayney and its community.”
