Monaghan County Council has warmly welcomed significant funding support under the Government’s Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF), which will help unlock the delivery of over 1,445 homes across the county.
The funding will support two key strategic infrastructure projects~:
Roosky Lands Access – allocation of up to €10 million
Monaghan Town Southern Access Road – allocation of between €10 million and €20 million.
These allocation ranges reflect the funding approval announced by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DHLGH), with initial funding provided for 2026 as part of a multi-annual investment programme.
Collectively, these projects will directly unlock lands for the delivery of approximately 945 residential units, while facilitating the wider housing activation of lands with potential for a further 500 residential units. This investment represents a significant step in addressing housing demand and catering for a growing population in Monaghan.
These strategic infrastructure projects will not only facilitate the delivery of housing but will also significantly enhance connectivity, support sustainable community development, improve overall accessibility and cater for a growing population within the region. In addition, the projects will incorporate the provision of active travel infrastructure and will facilitate upgrades to essential services, including water and wastewater treatment, ESB networks, and telecommunications. Collectively, these investments will help to create well-serviced, resilient, and connected communities across the county.
Looking ahead, Monaghan County Council is continuing to progress additional housing activation infrastructure projects and intends to submit applications under Phase 2 of the Housing Activation Office funding call, expected later this year. Key projects under development include the Carrickmacross Northern Link Road and St. Tiernach’s Link Road connecting the N54 to the Roslea Road.
At national level, the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, and Minister of State for Planning and Local Government, John Cummins TD, recently announced the first phase of the HIIF programme. A total of 82 infrastructure projects have been approved nationwide, which will directly enable the delivery of approximately 86,000 homes, with the potential for a further 113,000 homes.
The €1 billion Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund, administered by the Housing Activation Office within the Department, represents a major multi-annual investment aimed at unlocking land and enabling the delivery of housing at scale across Ireland.
Monaghan County Council has reaffirmed its commitment to progressing critical infrastructure that will unlock delivery, support sustainable development, and ensure the county is well positioned to support current and future housing needs.
