Major Funding Secured for St. Tiarnach’s Quarter Regeneration Project in Clones

The St. Tiarnach’s Quarter Regeneration Project in Clones has taken a major step forward with the allocation of €664,668 in funding under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF).

Monaghan County Council, in partnership with local community organisations and Clones and Monaghan GAA, is leading a strategic initiative to redevelop St. Tiarnach’s Park and revitalise the surrounding area in Clones. This major investment will support the development of a masterplan for the overall regeneration and kickstart the design phase for a multi-purpose Community Hub at the heart of the town, alongside public realm upgrades at the iconic stadium.

Cllr PJ O’Hanlon, Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, welcomed the announcement:

“It’s a proud moment for Clones and for County Monaghan. This investment will help revitalise the heart of the town and support the kind of inclusive, forward-thinking development that our communities deserve. I commend everyone involved in shaping the vision and securing this funding.”

The new hub will be a vibrant, multi-use space designed to serve the needs of community groups and social enterprises, while also offering office and meeting spaces, event and training areas, and access to multimedia and digital resources. This ambitious project builds on Clones’ unique assets, including its iconic GAA stadium, the state-of-the-art athletics facilities at the Peace Link, the Ulster Canal, and its strategic border location. It aims to enhance the town and surrounding area, promote Clones as a Centre of Excellence for Sport, create employment opportunities, and stimulate the local economy. Crucially, the initiative will also support the future development of Clones GAA, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of community life and sporting excellence.

Robert Burns, Chief Executive of Monaghan County Council, emphasised the strategic importance of the initiative:

“This funding represents a major step forward in delivering on our shared vision for Clones. The regeneration of St. Tiarnach’s Quarter will not only enhance the town’s infrastructure but also create new opportunities for community development, sport, and enterprise. We look forward to working with all stakeholders to bring this transformative project to life.”

The successful RRDF application was founded upon the ‘Vision’ for St. Tiarnach’s Quarter, formally launched in October 2024, and refined following extensive public consultation in February 2025.

James Kierans, Chairman of Clones GAA, expressed strong local support:

“Everyone associated with Clones GAA welcomes this funding announcement. This is great news for Monaghan and Clones. It is a huge step in fulfilling the vision for St. Tiarnach’s Quarter. We are proud to be involved and will continue to work hard to ensure Clones remains at the heart of Ulster Football.”

Declan Flanagan, Chairperson of Monaghan GAA, added:

“Monaghan GAA is proud to support this regeneration initiative. St. Tiarnach’s Park is a symbol of pride and passion for our county, and this project will ensure it continues to serve as a hub for sport, community, and connection.”

With this funding now secured, the St. Tiarnach’s Quarter Regeneration Project moves forward with confidence—laying the foundation for a vibrant, inclusive future at the heart of Clones.
