Monaghan County Council host civic reception in honour of the Applebee Family.

Monaghan County Council hosted a civic reception on Monday 11th May 2026, in honour of the Appelbee family (Perth), recognising their extraordinary courage and resilience following a kayaking incident on 30th January 2026.

The reception, held in the Shirley Arms Hotel, Carrickmacross, was attended by members of the Council, public representatives, and invited guests, reflecting the high regard in which the family is held across the county.

The event paid particular tribute to 13-year-old Austin Appelbee, whose remarkable bravery and determination played a vital role in saving his family. Following the incident, Austin swam for over four hours to reach shore before running more than 2 kilometres to raise the alarm. His mother Joanne (originally from Magheracloone), brother Beau and sister Grace spent 10 hours in the water, and it was Austin’s actions that directly led to the successful rescue of his family by the emergency services.

Speaking at the reception, the Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, Cllr PJ O’Hanlon said:

“On behalf of the elected members and the people of County Monaghan, we are deeply honoured to recognise the incredible courage shown by Austin Appelbee and the strength demonstrated by the entire Appelbee family. Austin’s actions were nothing short of heroic, and his bravery serves as an inspiration to us all.”

The Chief Executive of Monaghan County Council also commended the family, highlighting the importance of community, resilience, and the dedication of emergency responders who assisted in the rescue operation.

Monaghan County Council were proud to recognise the Appelbee family and to honour a story of courage, endurance, and selflessness that has touched the hearts of people across the county.
