Monaghan County Council Secures Nearly €50,000 in Community Monuments Funding

Heritage LogoMonaghan County Council’s Heritage Office has successfully secured almost €50,000 in funding from the National Monuments Service under the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage’s Community Monuments Fund for 2025.

The funding will support two significant heritage conservation projects within the county, highlighting the Council’s ongoing commitment to preserving Monaghan’s rich historical landscape.

Killeevan Abbey Restoration Project

Over €15,000 has been allocated for essential work at Killeevan Abbey, a site of considerable historical importance in the county. This funding will enable the commissioning of a comprehensive arborist report to assess the condition of trees on the grounds, fund necessary tree maintenance work, and support repairs to a damaged section of the boundary wall. These interventions will help safeguard this valuable heritage asset for future generations.

St. Patrick’s Holy Well Revitalisation

The Heritage Office also supported Killeevan Heritage Group in their successful application for €30,000 to enhance St. Patrick’s Holy Well in Clonfad near Scotshouse. This ecclesiastical site holds significant cultural and religious importance in the area. The project aims to reinstate public access to the well and develop appropriate interpretative materials to educate visitors about its historical significance. The Council extends its sincere gratitude to the landowner, whose cooperation and goodwill have been instrumental in making this project possible.

Monaghan County Council would like to thank the National Monuments Service for their continued support through the Community Monuments Fund, which plays a vital role in preserving and promoting our local heritage sites.
