Nearly €438,000 Boost for Monaghan Communities Driving Local Climate Action

Monaghan County Council is delighted to announce the launch of Phase 2 of the Community Climate Action Programme, supporting 20 community groups across County Monaghan to deliver practical, local climate action.

This phase represents a €437,892.90 investment in communities across the county, funded by the Government of Ireland under the Community Climate Action Programme and administered by Monaghan County Council. The programme places communities at the heart of climate action, empowering local groups to take visible, positive steps that benefit both people and the environment.

The supported projects span all five Community Climate Action themes — energy, travel, food and waste, shopping and recycling, and local climate and environmental action — and showcase the creativity and commitment of communities across Monaghan.

Projects supported under Phase 2 include solar PV and battery storage systems to help community buildings reduce energy costs and carbon emissions, as well as bicycle racks to encourage active and sustainable travel. They also include water refill stations to support conservation and reduce single-use plastics, along with motion sensor lighting and push button LED controls to improve energy efficiency in shared spaces.

In addition, projects include native tree and urban hedgerow planting to enhance biodiversity and green spaces, and rainwater harvesting infrastructure to strengthen local climate resilience.

Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, PJ O’Hanlon, said:

“The Community Climate Action Programme shows what can be achieved when communities are supported to take the lead on climate action. These 20 projects demonstrate real ambition and creativity at local level, and the approximately €438,000 investment announced today will deliver lasting benefits for our towns, villages and rural areas. I want to commend all the community groups involved for their commitment to building a more sustainable and resilient Monaghan.”

Chief Executive of Monaghan County Council, Robert Burns, added:

“Phase 2 of the Community Climate Action Programme is a strong example of how climate action can be practical, inclusive and community‑led. The projects being supported directly contribute to the objectives of the Monaghan County Council Climate Action Plan by improving energy efficiency, supporting active travel, enhancing biodiversity and strengthening climate resilience. Monaghan County Council is delighted to work alongside our communities in delivering tangible climate solutions that make a real difference locally.”

These community led projects make a direct contribution to delivering the Monaghan County Council Climate Action Plan. They focus on increasing the use of renewable energy and improving energy efficiency in local facilities, supporting walking and cycling through better local infrastructure, enhancing biodiversity and nature based solutions in towns, villages and rural areas, improving water management and climate adaptation, and embedding community engagement and behaviour change at the centre of climate action.

Phase 2 builds on the success of Phase 1 and highlights the strong appetite across Monaghan for locally driven solutions to climate change. By supporting communities to lead the way, the programme is helping to create a more sustainable, resilient and climate‑ready county.

Monaghan County Council looks forward to working with all participating groups as projects are rolled out and to celebrating the positive impacts these initiatives will have across communities throughout the county.
