Pedestrian Bridge Beam Lift Scheduled for Ballyalbany Active Travel Scheme

Monaghan County Council is pleased to confirm that a major construction milestone for the Ballyalbany Active Travel Scheme took place on Friday 17 April, with the lifting and installation of the main pedestrian bridge beam.

The beam lift represents a significant step forward in the delivery of the new pedestrian bridge, which will greatly improve safety and connectivity for people walking and cycling in the Ballyalbany area.

Commenting on the milestone, the Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, Cllr PJ’O Hanlon said:

“This is a very significant moment in the progress of the Ballyalbany Active Travel Scheme. The new pedestrian bridge will provide safer and more accessible connections for the local community, supporting walking and cycling while enhancing connectivity within the area. I want to acknowledge the cooperation and patience of residents businesses and the community  as these important works continue.”

The Chief Executive of Monaghan County Council, Mr Robert Burns also welcomed the progress, stating:

“The installation of the main bridge beam marks a key construction milestone for this scheme and demonstrates the continued commitment of Monaghan County Council to delivering high-quality active travel infrastructure. Projects like Ballyalbany are central to creating safer, more sustainable transport options and improving quality of life for our communities.”

Construction of the scheme is being undertaken by JONS Civil Engineering, with the bridge structure manufactured by Leonards Steel. The project has been designed by Atkins Réalis, and is funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) as part of the national Active Travel investment programme.

Nial O’ Connor, Director of Services, highlighted the operational significance of the lift, noting:

“A beam lift of this scale requires extensive planning and coordination, and this stage of the project reflects the high level of collaboration between our project team, contractors and designers. Safety remains a top priority throughout the operation, and we thank road users and residents for their cooperation while these works are carried out.”

Monaghan County Council looks forward to the completion of the Ballyalbany Active Travel Scheme, which will provide a safer, more sustainable and accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists, supporting healthier travel choices and enhanced local connectivity.
