Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2026

Monaghan County Council is now inviting applications under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) 2026.

Overview

The BHIS programme provides support to assist with the repair and conservation of historic buildings and structures. In doing so it helps support the employment of conservation professionals and craftspeople in the repair of the historic built environment.  The scheme is designed to assist the owners and/or occupiers of structures/properties that are protected under the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended).  It will be administered by Monaghan County Council’s Planning Section.

Eligibility

The categories of structures/properties eligible for funding under this scheme are:

  • Protected Structures
  • Proposed Protected Structures
  • Structures/properties in Architectural Conservation Areas (ACA)
  • Vernacular Structures – where a vernacular structure is also a Protected Structure or within an ACA it is eligible for grants of up to €50,000, otherwise the maximum allowable grant is €30,000 for a vernacular structure.

Funding available

The BHIS scheme will provide grants of between €2,500 and €50,000 for the conservation of historic structures.

Larger grants of between €50,000 and €200,000 will be made available under the Historic Structures Fund (HSF), which will be advertised in November 2025.
