Monaghan Named in Top 5 in IBAL Anti-Litter League – One of Its Best Results to Date

Monaghan has once again reaffirmed its reputation as one of Ireland’s cleanest towns, achieving 5th place out of 40 towns and cities in the first Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey of 2025.

Described in the report as “Cleaner than European Norms”, Monaghan’s performance is being hailed as one of its best ever, with eight of the ten surveyed locations awarded the top Grade A rating.

“This is another excellent result for Monaghan,” said Robert Burns, CEO of Monaghan County Council. “We are extremely proud of this performance, which reflects continued hard work of volunteers and our staff and the pride they have in their town and community.”

Exceptional Performance Across the Town

Among the top-ranking sites highlighted in the IBAL report are:

  • Monaghan Leisure Complex
  • Peter’s Lake and Park (including the adjoining recycling facility)
  • Monaghan County Museum, Library and Council Offices, which were praised as “an exceptionally freshly presented and maintained environment with a complete absence of litter throughout.”

A Team Effort Behind the Clean Streets

The Council credits this success to the Municipal District (MD) operational staff, the Environmental Patrol Warden, and the tireless efforts of the Monaghan Tidy Towns voluntary team.
