On 30th September 2026, Monaghan County Libraries was delighted to launch its new School Library Van with a visit to Deravoy National School. The School Library Van service brings books and library resources directly to rural primary schools across county Monaghan.
Students and teachers at Deravoy N.S. were joined by Cllr. Aidan Campbell, Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, Robert Burns, Chief Executive of Monaghan County Council and Deirdriú McQuaid, County Librarian and Head of Cultural Services at Monaghan County Council. Deravoy N.S. won the €100 prize draw that Monaghan County Libraries held in May 2026 as part of their review of library services for schools, which included consultation with primary school students and teachers.
By bringing library resources directly to primary schools, Monaghan County Libraries aims to foster a lifelong love of reading and ensure that all schools have easy access to library services. Research consistently demonstrates the positive impact that engagement with library services can have on literacy, educational attainment and overall wellbeing for children.
The new School Library Van is a visual celebration of county Monaghan’s rich heritage, stories and landscapes. The artwork was designed in collaboration with Saoi Studio and Monaghan-born artist Donough O’Malley. It features references to local legends, literature and some of the county’s most recognised places.
