Monaghan County Council has welcomed the appointment of Kennedy Fitzgerald Architects as lead consultant for the Integrated Design Team that will progress the proposed Carrickmacross Swimming Pool and Leisure Complex.
The appointment marks a significant milestone in the development of one of the most ambitious community and recreational infrastructure projects proposed for South Monaghan.
The appointment of the Integrated Design Team builds on significant work already undertaken by Monaghan County Council to advance the project. A comprehensive feasibility study was completed to assess current and future demand for swimming and leisure facilities across South Monaghan, examine the operational and financial viability of the proposed development, and identify the optimum mix of facilities to serve the needs of the area’s growing population.
In parallel, an extensive site selection process was undertaken, with a range of potential locations evaluated against planning, accessibility, infrastructure, environmental and development criteria. This detailed assessment culminated in the identification of a preferred site and established a robust foundation from which the project can now progress through the preliminary design and statutory planning stages.
Commenting on the appointment, Robert Burns, Chief Executive of Monaghan County Council, said:
“The appointment of Kennedy Fitzgerald Architects and the wider Integrated Design Team marks a major milestone in the development of this transformational project for Carrickmacross and South Monaghan.
“The project has the potential to address a long-standing gap in swimming provision in the area, while creating a modern leisure destination that promotes active lifestyles, community wellbeing and regional development.
“The proposed facility is envisaged to include a 25-metre swimming pool, learner pool, fitness and wellness facilities, community spaces and associated public realm improvements.
“The appointment signals the commencement of the next stage of project development, with the Integrated Design Team now tasked with progressing concept designs, stakeholder engagement, statutory approvals and detailed project planning.
“The Council will continue to engage with local stakeholders and explore future funding opportunities to support the delivery of this important strategic investment. We look forward to working closely with the Integrated Design Team, Elected Members, stakeholders and the wider community as the project develops over the coming months and years.”
Welcoming the appointment, Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, Cllr Aidan Campbell, described it as an important step forward for a project that has long been sought by the local community.
He said:
“This is a very positive day for Carrickmacross and the wider South Monaghan area. Local families, schools, sports clubs and community organisations have consistently expressed the need for a modern swimming pool and leisure facility. This milestone demonstrates Monaghan County Council’s ongoing commitment to progressing that vision.
“The proposed development represents a major commitment to advancing recreational and community infrastructure. It has the potential to become a flagship facility for County Monaghan, supporting health, wellbeing, participation in sport and social inclusion for decades to come.
“The appointment of an experienced Integrated Design Team, led by Kennedy Fitzgerald Architects, will allow the project to progress through the critical design and planning stages.
“The project aims to deliver a landmark facility that will enhance quality of life, support healthy living and strengthen Carrickmacross as a vibrant and growing town. I look forward to seeing it continue to develop as it progresses through the various stages.”
“I wish to acknowledge the excellent work of Monaghan County Council staff, particularly the Capital Projects team, who have guided this project through a rigorous feasibility and site selection process to reach this important milestone”.
