Monaghan County Council, the Tyrone Guthrie Centre and Coillte have formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the management and future development of the Annaghmakerrig Lake Walk.
Signed on 21st September 2026, the agreement brings together the three key stakeholders in a collaborative partnership that combines land ownership, forestry expertise and local authority support. The MoU provides a framework for the long-term management and enhancement of the popular recreational amenity while helping to secure future investment opportunities.
The partners share a common objective to develop and manage the Annaghmakerrig Lake Walk, enhance recreational opportunities, increase public enjoyment of the natural environment and deliver social and economic benefits to the wider area.
Under the agreement, Monaghan County Council has committed to seeking capital funding opportunities, supporting agreed projects and works, and assisting in the development of recreational infrastructure. These commitments will help strengthen the future sustainability and development of the Lake Walk.
A key element of the MoU is the preparation of a Masterplan for the area. The Masterplan will identify future opportunities, guide investment decisions, coordinate development works and support applications for external funding.
The partnership also recognises the significant recreation and tourism potential of Annaghmakerrig. Planned improvements may include enhanced walking trails, improved signage, greater accessibility and the development of visitor facilities, helping to increase visitor numbers and further strengthen the area’s tourism offering.
Speaking on behalf of Ballybay/Clones Municipal District, Leas-Cathaoirleach Cllr Richard Truell welcomed the agreement, noting that it reflects a shared commitment to protecting and enhancing one of County Monaghan’s most valued natural amenities for the benefit of current and future generations.
