Monaghan County Council has successfully launched the Monaghan County Heritage Strategy 2026-2031 at a special event held in Castle Leslie, bringing together community representatives, heritage organisations, elected members, cultural practitioners and partners from across the county.
The event marked an important milestone for heritage in County Monaghan and celebrated the collective efforts of communities, stakeholders and organisations who contributed to the development of the new five-year strategy. The strategy provides a framework for protecting, celebrating and promoting Monaghan’s rich and diverse heritage, encompassing everything from historic buildings and archaeological monuments to biodiversity, traditions, language, music and local stories.
The event was formally opened by Gráinne McElwain, who welcomed guests and highlighted the importance of heritage in shaping identity, belonging and community connections throughout the county.
Attendees heard contributions from Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, Councillor Aidan Campbell; Chief Executive Robert Burns; Catherine Casey of the Heritage Council; and Monaghan County Heritage Officer Kara Ward, who outlined the vision and priorities contained within the new strategy.
The official launch was performed by Cllr Aidan Campbell, marking the beginning of a new chapter for heritage planning and engagement in County Monaghan.
The afternoon also celebrated Monaghan’s rich cultural heritage through a moving poetry reading by acclaimed poet Caitríona Ní Chléircín and a special presentation by Dr Seán McElwain on the Our Dear Dark Mountain project, showcasing the musical traditions of Sliabh Beagh and the wider Monaghan area. Guests were treated to a wonderful musical performance which brought these traditions vividly to life.
Speaking after the event, Heritage Officer Kara Ward thanked all those who contributed to the development of the strategy and to the success of the launch.
“The Monaghan County Heritage Strategy 2026-2031 reflects the passion, knowledge and commitment of communities, organisations and individuals throughout the county. We are grateful to everyone who shared their ideas during the consultation process and look forward to working together to deliver the strategy over the coming years.”
Monaghan County Council also acknowledged the support of the Heritage Council, the Monaghan Heritage Forum, community groups and all those involved in safeguarding and promoting the county’s heritage. Special thanks were extended to Castle Leslie for hosting the event and to everyone who helped organise the launch.
The successful launch demonstrated the strong appreciation for heritage across County Monaghan and highlighted the important role it plays in strengthening communities, fostering a sense of place and ensuring that Monaghan’s unique heritage is protected and celebrated for future generations.
