Monaghan County Council and Monaghan County Libraries were proud to host the Library Association of Ireland (LAI) and Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professional Joint (CILIP) Conference 2026, welcoming library professionals from across Ireland to the Peace Campus, Monaghan, on 29 and 30 April.
The two-day event brought together delegates from public, academic and special libraries to explore the evolving role of libraries in community life, democratic engagement, education and inclusion.
The conference featured keynote addresses from international and Irish speakers, including Sam Helmick, President of the American Library Association, and Neil MacInnes, Strategic Lead for Libraries, Galleries and Culture with Manchester City Council. Delegates also took part in plenary sessions, panel discussions, lightning talks, poster presentations and site visits showcasing local cultural and library services.
A total of 19 exhibitors attended the conference, providing delegates with opportunities to engage with the latest library products, services and innovations.
Speaking at the event, Deirdriu McQuaid, County Librarian with Monaghan County Council, said: “We were delighted to welcome colleagues from across Ireland to Monaghan for LAI CILIP Conference 2026. Hosting this national event at the Peace Campus provided a valuable opportunity to showcase our libraries and the strong sense of community that underpins library service here in Monaghan.
Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, PJ O’Hanlon attended the event and welcomed the library sector to the county. He said “We are very proud to host you in Monaghan. The conference highlights the vital role libraries play in connecting people, ideas and services at local and national level.”
Monaghan County Council and Monaghan County Libraries extended their thanks to all speakers, delegates, exhibitors, organisers and partners who contributed to the success of the conference.
