Church Square was awash with pride, celebration and community spirit on Thursday evening as thousands of people gathered for a special Civic Reception and Homecoming Celebration honouring Monaghan boxing stars Aaron and Stevie McKenna.
Hosted by Monaghan County Council, the event recognised the outstanding achievements of the two brothers following a historic weekend for Irish boxing. Aaron McKenna recently realised a lifelong ambition by becoming IBF World Middleweight Champion, while Stevie McKenna continued his impressive professional career with a commanding victory on the same fight card.
Supporters of all ages travelled from across County Monaghan and beyond to welcome the brothers home, creating a vibrant atmosphere in the heart of Monaghan Town. Throughout the evening, the pride that local communities have in the brothers and their achievements was evident, with warm applause and enthusiastic support greeting Aaron and Stevie as they took to the stage.
The event was compèred by Monaghan native and sports and entertainment presenter and MC, Gráinne McElwain, who guided the evening’s celebrations and conducted engaging on-stage conversations with the brothers as they reflected on their careers, their achievements and the support they have received from family, friends and supporters throughout their journey.
The evening also provided an opportunity to recognise the important role played by the wider McKenna family. Aaron and Stevie paid tribute to their parents, family members and supporters whose encouragement, commitment and belief helped them achieve success on the international stage.
A particular highlight of the event was the strong turnout of supporters, many of whom had the opportunity to meet their sporting heroes, take selfies, and receive autographs creating lasting memories of a very special occasion. The brothers spoke warmly about the importance of dedication, perseverance and hard work, offering inspiration to the next generation of Monaghan sportspeople.

“The atmosphere in Church Square this evening was truly special. The huge turnout reflected the affection and admiration that people across Monaghan have for Aaron and Stevie. While we gathered to celebrate extraordinary sporting achievements, we were also celebrating the values they represent: dedication, humility, family and community. It was a proud night for the entire county. I also wish to thank the staff of Monaghan County Council and to acknowledge the hard work carried out by everyone to make this event a huge success.’’

At the homecoming celebrations, Aaron and Stevie were presented with specially commissioned commemorative gifts by Monaghan County Council. Uniquely designed and handcrafted by a local Monaghan business, the gifts recognised the outstanding achievement and the pride they have brought to Monaghan through their boxing success.
