Monaghan County Council is now inviting applications under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) Historic Thatched Building Stream 2027.
Overview
The purpose of the scheme is to protect the heritage value of historic thatched roof buildings across Ireland, including dwellings and other structures. The scheme is being administered by Monaghan County Council’s Planning Section.
Eligibility Structures and Levels of funding available
The BHIS Historic Thatched Buildings Stream is intended to support thatched buildings in need of repair and conservation works.

| Historic thatched building | Any historic thatched structure, including domestic or commercial properties. | Up to €20,000 | 80% of total cost of works |
Eligible applications will be assessed for selection under the following criteria:
- Significance of the structure
- Efficacy of the works
- Quality of the works
- Contribution to public amenity
Note: An application under the BHIS Historic Thatched Buildings Stream does not preclude a separate application under the Historic Structures Fund or the mainstream of the BHIS, but only one grant can be availed of per structure.

Completed applications using Form A and accompanied by a comprehensive method statement must be submitted to Fiona McEntee, Administrative Officer, Planning Section, No.1 Dublin Street, Monaghan Town, H18 X982 or emailed to builtheritage@monaghancoco.ie on or before the 30th October 2026.
