Communities across County Monaghan are preparing to take part in Climate Action Week 2026, which will run from 12th to 18th October, bringing together community groups, schools, businesses and individuals to celebrate and support local climate action.
The annual initiative provides an opportunity to showcase practical actions that can help reduce emissions, protect biodiversity, reduce waste and build more sustainable and resilient communities. This year’s theme, “Act Local: Rethink, Repair, Reuse”, highlights the important role everyone can play through everyday actions and community-led initiatives.
With more than 40 events and activities taking place throughout the week, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. The programme includes workshops, biodiversity projects, community events, talks, repair and upcycling initiatives, story times, family-friendly activities and the flagship Circular Economy in Action Conference: Rethink, Repair, Reuse taking place at Monaghan Peace Campus on Saturday, 17th October.
A significant number of events are being delivered by local community groups supported through Monaghan County Council’s Climate Action Week Small Grants Scheme. These locally led initiatives will take place in towns, villages and neighbourhoods across the county, demonstrating the growing commitment of communities to climate action and environmental sustainability.
Aidan Campbell, Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, said:
“Climate Action Week showcases the very best of community spirit and local leadership. From biodiversity initiatives and repair projects to educational events and community gatherings, the programme demonstrates that climate action can be practical, positive and accessible to everyone. I would encourage people of all ages to take a look at the programme and support the events taking place across the county. I would also like to acknowledge and thank the staff of Monaghan County Council, whose hard work and commitment, together with the support of our community groups and partner organisations, have helped to deliver such a diverse and engaging programme for Climate Action Week 2026.”
Robert Burns, Chief Executive of Monaghan County Council, welcomed the programme of events:
“Climate Action Week provides an important opportunity to engage communities in the delivery of the objectives set out in Monaghan County Council’s Climate Action Plan. Achieving our climate goals requires collective action, and the wide range of events taking place throughout the week demonstrates the commitment of communities, schools, organisations and businesses across the county to playing their part. Through practical actions such as reducing waste, enhancing biodiversity, improving energy efficiency and embracing circular economy principles, people can make a meaningful contribution to building a more sustainable and climate-resilient County Monaghan.”
Throughout the week, Monaghan County Council will be highlighting upcoming events and activities across its social media channels, helping residents discover opportunities to get involved in their local area. Community groups and organisations will also be sharing details of their own events and activities online.
Together, through local action and community collaboration, Climate Action Week 2026 aims to inspire lasting change and help build a more sustainable future for County Monaghan.
