Draft Community Garden & Allotment Strategy

Monaghan County Council is delighted to publish the Draft Community Garden & Allotment Strategy

Monaghan County Council invites members of the public, community groups, stakeholders, and interested organisations to provide feedback on the Draft Community Garden & Allotment Strategy.

This Draft Strategy sets out a coordinated framework to support the development of accessible, high-quality community gardens and allotments across County Monaghan, strengthening climate resilience, enhancing biodiversity, promoting sustainable food production, and supporting community wellbeing through locally led initiatives. It responds to increasing demand for local food growing spaces while advancing wider climate action, environmental, and community objectives.

The strategy is organised under 5 strategic themes:

  1. Climate Action & Biodiversity: Focusing on creating gardens that are climate – resilient, and that protect and enhance Biodiversity.
  2. Food growing & access: Enabling access to local food growing areas across the county allowing for sites to be well-designed, inclusive and safe.
  3. Community Participation & Wellbeing: To build strong community-led growing spaces, that encourage local participation, ownership, and collaboration.
  4. Education & Awareness: Supporting education and skills development, turning community gardens & allotments into hubs for learning, sharing and promoting sustainable living.
  5. Delivery Governance & Support: Ensuring strong structures and supports are in place for communities to deliver projects.
