Inniskeen Fane River Bridge Trial Shuttle System

MCC Crest WithText

Monaghan County Council Active Travel Department in conjunction with Carrickmacross Castleblayney Municipal District are introducing a temporary traffic management system for a period of 4 weeks of a trial shuttle system at Fane River Bridge, Inniskeen, Co. Monaghan.

The purpose of this trial is to assess the feasibility and operability of a permanent shuttle system that would provide safe pedestrian and cyclist facilities across the bridge, which currently lacks such infrastructure due to its narrow width.

The measures to be installed will include

  • Temporary Traffic Signals to control traffic over the bridge to one way flow
  • Installation of temporary shared path over the bridge along the eastern parapet.
  • Signalised pedestrian crossing on the L4630 at the St Daig’s Church/Round Tower.
  • Courtesy shuttle system under the railway bridge on L4630.
  • Enhanced safety for pedestrians and cyclists wishing to cross the bridge.
  • Improved road safety for road users.

The system is to be installed commencing

From:                                Thursday 2nd October 2025

To:                                      Thursday 30th October 2025

Times:                               24 hours, 7 days a week, for 4 weeks duration

It will then be decommissioned after this period and the original road layout reinstated upon completion of the trial period. During this period, data will be captured to assess feasibility and operability of a Shuttle System over Fane River Bridge.

There will be an impact on traffic flow, and in order to assess this, over the trial period, traffic, pedestrian and cyclists counts will be taken and the flow of traffic will be carefully observed.

Feedback from members of the public is welcome via the survey available on Monaghan County Council website Home | Monaghan County Council’s Consultation Portal
