Official Launch of Music Generation Cavan/Monaghan “Making Music Happen”

Official Launch of Music Generation Cavan/Monaghan “Making Music Happen”

Thursday 27th February marked a historic day for counties Cavan and Monaghan with the official launch of Music Generation Cavan / Monaghan.

At a special event held in Cavan Town Hall Theatre, local representatives from Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB), Monaghan County Council, Cavan County Council, Music Generation and the Local Arts Education Partnership gathered to officially launch the programme.

Music Generation is Ireland’s national music education programme which aims to create access to high-quality, subsidised performance music education to all children and young people. Music Generation is initiated by Music Network and co-funded by U2, The Ireland Funds, the Department of Education and Skills and Local Music Education Partnerships

The Lead Partner for Music Generation Cavan / Monaghan is Cavan and Monaghan ETB, in partnership with Cavan and Monaghan County Councils.  The launch event celebrated the collaborative work of the local partner agencies in bringing performance music education to the region of Cavan and Monaghan.

Cllr. Séamus Coyle – Cathaoirleach, Monaghan County Council said: “Bringing these musical experiences to local young people and their teachers is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when we align our resources and ambitions.”

Music Generation Cavan/Monaghan began in January 2019 with the appointment of Music Development Officer, Mairéad Duffy and Administrator, Paul Markey. The programme has since recruited a panel of Musician Educators and in September 2019 commenced delivering programmes in various settings across Monaghan and Cavan. Currently over 1,400 children from across the two counties have weekly access to Music Generation in Primary Schools and Pre Schools. In January of this year, a Traditional Irish music programme began in 9 additional Primary Schools.

There are also two pilot projects underway in partnership with Foróige and Youth Work Ireland Cavan / Monaghan. These projects have introduced teenagers to song writing and vocal ensemble work.

Cllr. Clifford Kelly, Chairperson of Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board said: “Not only has Music Generation Cavan/Monaghan brought music to everyday lives of our children and young people, it has also provided employment in the region for local musicians, enabling them to work in their native counties, bringing their skill and musicianship to the future music-makers of Monaghan and Cavan.”

Eoin Doyle, Director of Services, Cavan County Council said: “I look forward to the coming years, as we partner with Monaghan County Council, CMETB and Music Generation Cavan / Monaghan in providing improved access to performance music education for all of our young people.“

In May, a series of showcase performances will be held in venues in Cavan and Monaghan. These performance opportunities are a hugely important part of this initiative, providing a platform for the children and young people involved with Music Generation to perform together and to share their talents with an audience.

National Tree Week 2020: Saturday 21st March to Friday 27th March

Monaghan County Council is pleased to participate once again in National Tree Week, and will be making hundreds of native saplings available to communities free of charge, to be planted around the county. Coillte are providing 200 saplings and these will be supplemented by natives grown by the Council’s own staff from local seed.

Communities wishing to avail of the trees should contact Fionnuala Mulligan in the Community Section. Email:  fmulligan@monaghancoco.ie

The Tree Council of Ireland and Coillte are again partnering for National Tree Week and this year’s theme is “Healthy Trees Healthy Planet”.

The theme this year is to promote tree health and the important role trees play in protecting our planet by taking on climate change and providing natural renewable resources. It also references the health benefits, both physical and mental, that trees and forests provide. Trees will be available for collection across the country through the County Councils who have applied to the Tree Council of Ireland for trees. Schools and community groups are urged to register their events with the Tree Council (www.treecouncil.ie) and then contact their local County Council to obtain saplings. (subject to availability)

Coillte will donate 30,000 native tree saplings during National Tree Week 2020 such as oak, birch, alder, and rowan in coordination with the Tree Council of Ireland.

Pat Neville, Communications Manager for Coillte, said,

“We’re extremely proud to be continuing our partnership with the Tree Council of Ireland for what we hope will be the best Tree Week yet! National Tree Week reminds us of all the benefits of trees and helps bring attention to climate change issues, and the positive role trees play in our communities. We are encouraging everyone to register their events and use the campaign hashtag #treeweek2020 to promote their events”

National Tree Week 2020 is also on message with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation who has declared the year 2020 the International Year Plant Health. National Tree Week 2020 supports this theme by striving to raise awareness about protecting plant and tree health while protecting the environment, and boosting economic development, as the Irish forestry sector supports 12,000 rural based jobs in Ireland and contributes approximately €2.3 billion to the economy every year.

Coillte has supported National Tree Week since 1989, providing over half a million trees to the annual campaign.

President of the Tree Council of Ireland, Joseph McConville, said,

“National Tree Week provides the ideal opportunity for local groups to get together and make a lasting difference in their communities. Last year we saw over 300 events take place around the country and we’d love to see more parents and teachers get involved and educate their children about trees and the diverse role they play in rural and urban environments.”

As the week draws closer you will find a list of all registered events on the Tree Council of Ireland’s website. There will be tree planting and educational events taking place across the country, where the public can find out what trees do for our environment, which trees suit the Irish ecosystem and how you can ensure your tree stays healthy throughout the whole year.

If you’re a planting a tree during National Tree week, please be sure to tag @3council @coilltenews and use the campaign hashtag #treeweek2020.

Check it Fits Event in Monaghan Town on Tuesday 3rd March from 10am to 5.30pm

Travelling by car can potentially be one the most dangerous things a baby or child is likely to do each day, so it’s important to ensure that your small passengers are as well protected as possible by having the proper child car seat for their height and weight correctly installed in their vehicle.

The Road Safety Authority’s Check It Fits service will be visiting both Monaghan Town this March. Experts in child car seat safety will offer advice on the different types of seats available, how to fix any problem, demonstrate how to fit the restraint correctly and answer any queries you might have. They will ensure that the child seat fitted in your vehicle is safe and secure, as figures released by the RSA show that as many as 4 out of 5 child car seats are incorrectly fitted, which can potentially lead to serious injury or even death in a collision.

Adrian O’Sullivan, Road Safety Officer with Monaghan County Council said, “Parents can spend a considerable amount of time and money researching and purchasing the safest car seat they can find, but if it is incorrectly fitted or if the child is incorrectly secured, it may result in little or no protection in the event of an accident. I would therefore ask anyone with a child seat fitted in their vehicle to take a few minutes to avail of the upcoming visit to Monaghan on 3rd March”.

“Many of us have child seats fitted in our vehicles but as our children grow we rarely check them to see if they require adjustment or are still suitable for their needs. The law currently states that all children under 150cms or 36kgs must use a child car seat appropriate to their weight and height” added the Road Safety Officer

The Check It Fits service will be in Fleming’s Supervalu car park in Monaghan Town on Tuesday 3rd March from 10am to 5.30pm.  No appointment is necessary, and the free checks are open to all makes and models of cars and child car seats. For information visit www.checkitfits.ie.

Don’t let your child be a statistic, get your child car seat checked.
