Monaghan County Council’s Dublin Street Regeneration Plan picks up Prestigious National Award

Over 1,000 of Ireland’s leading property professionals turned out at the Convention Centre Dublin on Thursday 8th November last for the KPMG Irish Independent Property Industry Excellence Awards.

The awards are endorsed by all relevant professional institutes, representative bodies and State agencies, namely Engineers Ireland, the Irish Planning Institute, Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland, Society of Chartered Surveyors, Construction Industry Federation, Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers, Industrial Development Authority, Dublin Institute of Technology, Office of Public Works and Enterprise Ireland.

Monaghan County Council beat off strong competition from other shortlisted nominees of Cork County Council, Cosgrave Developments, Cairn Plc and JNP Architects to win the Excellence in Planning Award.

Accepting the award on the night, Máire Cullinan, Executive Planner, said, ‘The Council recognised the need to address vacant and derelict backlands within the town centre and appointed the expertise of Sheridan Woods Architects and Urban Planners to consult the community and prepare a regeneration plan. An application has been submitted under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund to the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, which would see the infrastructure delivered to progress the regeneration of Dublin Street.’

The Plan provides for the development of a new public square, O’Duffy Place, linking Dublin Street to the Lower Courthouse car park. The Plan is an opportunity for landowners and developers to realise the potential of Dublin Street, to improve the range and quality of offer in retail, hospitality and services and will define Monaghan as a shopping and visitor destination.
The Dublin Street Regeneration Plan was acknowledged earlier in the year when it won the Irish Planning Institute Design Award, recognising the purpose of the Plan to provide guidance on the regeneration options for the future development of the Dublin Street Regeneration Plan study area to create a sustainable and integrated development approach that would consolidate the town centre, and increase its attractiveness as a place to live, work and visit.

The other Property Industry Excellence category winners were: Bredagh Old School (Community Benefit Award), Henry J Lyons Architects (Design Project Award), Kore Insulation (Energy Efficiency Award), JLL (Commercial Agency of the Year), Savills (Residential Agency of the Year), Hibernia Reit (Property Investment/Fund Manager of the Year), Shannon Commercial Properties (Regional Excellence), BAM Facilities Management (Facilities Management), Mark, Andrew and Kelly Cosgrave – Dublin Loft Company (Emerging Talent) and SISK (Contractor of the Year) and also taking the Overall Winner award.

Invitation: Launch of PLATO Growth Programme in Fermanagh and Omagh

Ambitious companies in the Region in all industry sectors are being offered a unique opportunity to invest in their management and leadership skills through a customised cross-border programme underpinned by peer-to-peer learning and “learning from the Bigger Guys”. The programme offers owner managers a business support forum where they can network and discuss business growth challenges with established large ‘parent’ companies in the region. Update from Monaghan County Council RE: Land Subsidence Incident at Drumgossat/Knocknacran Magheracloone

Following notification from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE), Monaghan County Council will re-open the LP4900 local road to Drumgossat this evening, Wednesday 31st October 2018.

The R179 Regional Road was reopened last Friday.

An independent consulting firm, commissioned by the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE) has reviewed and verified the results of geological & hydrological testing carried out over the past four weeks by Gyproc Ireland Ltd and SRK Consultants.

Monaghan County Council wish to thank the residents, businesses and community of Magheracloone for their forbearance over the past five weeks. The diversions and one-way systems were put in place to provide safe access to the locality following the land subsidence and the subsequent increased risk to road users on the R179 and LP4900 roads.

Update from Monaghan County Council RE Land Subsidence Incident at Drumgossat/Knocknacran Magheracloone

Friday 26th October 2018 1:00 pm

The R179 Regional Road from Carrickmacross to Kingscourt will reopen to road traffic today (Friday) at 13:30. The LP4900 local road to Drumgossat will remain closed until further notice.

An independent consulting firm, commissioned by the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE) has reviewed and verified the results of geological & hydrological testing carried out over the past four weeks by Gyproc Ireland Ltd and SRK Consultants and consider that it is safe to re-open the R179 Regional Road. Further testing and analysis of ground conditions in the vicinity of the LP4900 local road will continue over the coming days and this road will remain closed.

A revised one-way system is in place for local traffic wishing to access Drumgossat School and Church.

Monday 22^nd October 2018   5.00 pm

Monaghan County Council and the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE) met with Gyproc Ireland Ltd. and SRK Consultants, in Carrickmacross this afternoon.

The results of geological & hydrological testing carried out over the past three weeks were discussed. A programme of testing to be carried out in forthcoming days was agreed with Gyproc Ireland Ltd.  Subject to independent verification of the final test results later this week, Monaghan County Council hope to be in a position to make a decision as to whether the R179 and LP4900 roads can be reopened to the public.

 

Traffic Management

In the interests of public safety, the Road Closure Orders remain in place until further notification.

The  Carrickmacross/Kingscourt Road (R179) will remain closed from Drumgossat Crossroads to O’Rourke’s Filling Station at Drummond. In addition, the LP4900 to Drumgossat will also remain closed to traffic. The road closures will remain in place until the detailed technical assessments confirm that they are safe for public use.

Traffic between Carrickmacross and Kingscourt is being diverted via Shercock. Monaghan County Council appeals to local residents to adhere to the one-way system that is in place around Drumgossat school.

Doran Motors and Treacy’s Hotel are fully accessible from Carrickmacross using the R179 regional road. O’Rourke’s filling station, Ciaran McConnon Motors and Cabra Castle Hotel are accessible from Kingscourt using the R179 or local diversionary routes.

Monitoring and surveying of the lands and public roads at Magheracloone continues following a programme agreed by Monaghan County Council and the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE) with Gyproc Ireland Ltd. and SRK Consultants, at last Wednesday’s meeting.

 

Areas for further investigation were identified after discussion on the preliminary geological assessment report last week. The focus of this investigation is on the R179 Regional Road and residences located within the safety zone.

 

The results of ongoing surveying and monitoring of ground and underground conditions are collated and analysed before verification by the DCCAE’s geological and mining specialists. All parties are scheduled to meet next on Monday 22 October 2018.

 

Pending an outcome from the technical assessments, Monaghan County Council has had to extend the Road Closure Order beyond its original date to 5 November 2018.  The Council recognises the difficulties caused to local businesses and residents in the area. We are endeavouring to have this investigation and verification process completed as quickly as possible, bearing in mind the need to maintain public safety, at all times.

Monaghan County Council are delighted to announce a two-day celebration of Project Children by screening the “How to Defuse a Bomb: The Project Children Story”. This a powerful feature documentary film that celebrates the unsullied hard work and dedication of the Project Children Charity and one of its founding members, Denis Mulcahy, a retired and highly decorated NYPD Bomb Squad Officer. The film documents the pursuit of reconciliation in Northern Ireland, through the medium of its children. Offering over 23,000 children a six-week summer reprieve from the intrinsic, sectarian violence of “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland, this extraordinary tale resonates to all that is good in this world. In today’s era of both a shared and integrated education, this may not seem unusual but in the segregated society of the seventies, this was a massive step toward healing.

Co. Monaghan proudly host Denis, Project Children and many key participants featured in the documentary, to the Garage Theatre on the night. Denis, his family and friends of Project Children are traveling from America to attend this celebration and is facilitating a Q&A after the screening and we welcome all to contribute with their questions.

Denis’ Awards and Achievements – “Too numerous to list”

Denis Mulcahy has received many accolades for his vigorous work in the assisting the peace process in Northern Ireland and was twice nominated for the very prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for all his work for the children of Northern Ireland. He was runner up to both Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa.

In 1995, Denis received the Top Cop Award in Washington D.C. by Vice President Al Gore and later that year, Denis accompanied President Clinton on his historic trip to Northern Ireland.

In 2016 Denis received the title of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II. In 2017 he also received the Presidential Distinguished Service Award for the Irish Abroad, presented to him personally by the President of Ireland Michael J. Higgins. In 2018, he also received a presentation on behalf of the Washington Ireland Programme from the Irish Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar. Taoiseach Varadkar was one of the first participants from the south of Ireland on the Washington Ireland Programme. This same year the Mulcahy Scholarship was founded by the Aisling Irish Community Centre, Yonkers, NY. The scholarship is an opportunity for American high school students to attend summer camps in Ireland with the aim of experiencing and connecting to Irish culture and heritage. It is a fitting tribute to the Mulcahy family, who for forty years provided temporary respite to the children of Northern Ireland and to Denis who has been a devoted board member to the Aisling Centre since 1996.

About the Film

Narrated by Liam Neeson and written/directed by Des Henderson, “How to Defuse a Bomb: The Project Children Story” is an inspiring documentary focusing on the Project Children charity, whose work aimed at enlightening children of “The Troubles” that a non-violent existence was feasible and peace in Northern Ireland was possible once you embrace the other side.

The film hosts interviews from Denis Mulcahy and his brother, Pat Mulcahy, who along with others, founded the charity in 1975. It also offers raw accounts on the experiences of the host families and the now adults, who participated as kids in the programme. The dip back in time to the interview archives from the 1970’s offers powerful accentuation of the impact this programme has had on the direction of so many lives. Former US President, Bill Clinton is also featured in the film, following Denis’ fundamental role in the work of reconciliation in Northern Ireland, along-side Mr. Clinton.

“How to Defuse a Bomb” is a formidable film that tells the authentic story of real people, whose lives are now changed forever. It is imperative for the world to see this show. Although its predominant focus is on Northern Ireland, the documentary’s message highlights the need for a cohesive, visionary approach in order to surpass the complications of conflict. Monaghan County Council, together with officials from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE) and the Environmental Protection Agency met with representatives from Gyroc Ireland Ltd and mining consultants, SRK , in relation to the subsidence issues at the disused mine at Drumgossat, Magheracloone, Co. Monaghan.

SRK Consultants and Gyproc Ireland Ltd. presented a preliminary geological assessment report to the meeting today. Further surveying, technical assessments and monitoring of ground conditions will continue over coming weeks, before a decision in relation to the re-opening of roads in the area can be made.
