Monaghan Women’s Assembly was established on March 8^th, 2021. The aim of Monaghan Women’s Assembly is to bring the voice of local women into local government in County Monaghan.  The Monaghan Women’s Assembly will provide a platform for local women to raise and discuss issues that impact on their lives with the members of Monaghan County Council, and to ensure gender equality is embedded in the policy and practices of the local authority in the future.

In a short time, the MWA has been very successful and following a very extensive consultation process published a comprehensive report “Women Experiences Living Through Covid 19”. This report documented the experiences of women across County Monaghan of life through Covid 19 for women. The report highlights areas for consideration by local and national government for a post COVID 19 society.

An Executive Committee has been established and the photos attached are from our most recent meeting. We want more women to get involved and are now opening up a registration process that is free and open to all women who want to be a part of a future where women are involved in the decision making process on matters that affect them.

The Patrick Kavanagh Centre enjoyed great success at the recent Chambers Ireland – Excellence in Local Government Awards ceremony recently broadcast online on Thursday 18^th November last, scooping the prize in the ‘Supporting Tourism’ category.

The Excellence in Local Government Awards, supported by the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage, showcase best practice in local government and recognise the skills, hard work, innovation and enthusiasm within local government.

The Patrick Kavanagh Centre was recognised as, ‘An exhibition and cultural space celebrating the life of

Patrick Kavanagh and the landscape that inspired his craft. The project has reinvigorated Patrick

Kavanagh’s legacy with renewed interest in his writing and the significance of Inniskeen as inspiration for his craft.’

 

Monaghan County Council had an impressive performance at the awards, winning three out of 11 nominated categories, including wins for ‘Festival of the Year’ for the ever-popular Cavan-Monaghan Online Science Festival 2020 and in the ‘Disability Services Provision’ category for the My Right to Vote – General Election Voter Education project.

 

Issued 1 December 2021 – Irish Water has partnered with Retail Ireland, to offer its members the opportunity to improve their green credentials with bespoke training on how to reduce their water consumption while also driving down operating costs for their businesses.

Irish Water’s specialised training for the retail sector provides staff and owners with the knowledge and expertise to lower water consumption and reduce costs while protecting the environment. Small changes such as identifying water being wasted on site, setting a baseline for water use to understand what is normal or average use, raising awareness amongst staff and customers or upgrading to water efficient devices can all help to reduce water use and save money.

The programme is the first of its kind in Ireland and is fully supported by Ibec, Chambers Ireland, SEAI, Origin Green, BIM and Enterprise Ireland.

Arnold Dillon, Retail Ireland Director is encouraging member businesses to sign up for this invaluable training: “A range of retailers have already completed Irish Water’s Water Stewardship Programme and the feedback has been incredibly positive. They’ve taken a range of new tips, tools and information from the course and transferred them into tangible results, saving water and money for their businesses.”

Ken Stockil, Central Solutions (Irish Water programme delivery partner) added: “The award winning Certified Water Stewardship Programme from Irish Water and the Lean & Green Skillnet, provides world class support to enterprises seeking to reduce their water use and strengthen their environmental credentials through verifiable action. This online training allows businesses to participate at a time that suits their busy schedules and will help their employees and customers make conscious decisions about water consumption that will benefit everyone.”

Retailers interested in getting involved in this free training are asked to register before December 15 at www.water.ie/stewardship.

Christine Crawford, Irish Water added: “Sustainability is a top priority for Irish retailers. Irish Water’s Certified Water Stewardship Programme supports retailers to move to more environmentally responsible water management practices. The programme is providing international best practice training to support businesses to use water sustainably, in a way that benefits people and nature.

“While retailers are the focus today Irish Water has developed three steps to support all businesses to move to more sustainable water management. We would encourage all businesses to start the water conservation journey and go green, the first step is the Water Conservation Pledge which only takes minutes to complete. This is followed by free online Water Conservation Training, and finally business representatives can enrol and become a Certified Water Steward.”

The programme is funded by Irish Water and the Lean & Green Skillnet with the support of Skillnet Ireland and the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. It gives participating businesses the tools to save water and money by providing them with the knowledge and skills to reduce water consumption and operating costs. Participants will learn the key principles of water stewardship and the actions required to improve environmental performance.

The Global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence against women is an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute. “16 Days,” as it has become known, was launched and continues to be coordinated by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership.

The dates for the campaign were chosen to link violence against women and human rights and emphasize that gender-based violence against women is a violation of human rights: since 1991, the campaign has been active between November 25, the International Day Against Violence Against Women, and December 10, International Human Rights Day.

Over 6000+  organizations in approximately 187 countries have participated in the Global 16 Days Campaign since 1991, with a reach of 300 million.

The level of domestic violence reported to Gardai in Co. Monaghan is amongst the highest in Ireland.  Coercive control is now a crime in Ireland.

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims to be commemorated this Sunday.

The annual World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) is commemorated annually on the third Sunday of November, with commemorations to remember the victims of road traffic crashes and their families taking place around the country.

Speaking in advance of this year’s commemoration, Adrian O’Sullivan, Road Safety Officer with Monaghan County Council reflected on the numbers who have lost their lives on  our roads, with four fatalities to date in 2021 in County Monaghan, an increase of one compared to the same period in 2020. “These figures don’t include the countless numbers left with life changing injuries over the same period which never make the news. We all know someone whose lives have been deeply affected by the loss of a friend, colleague, neighbour or member of the community. The effect on our emergency services, who deal with the consequences of crashes daily, is profound” said Adrian.

Monaghan County Council is inviting businesses and householders to ‘Shine a Light’ between 7 and 8pm this Sunday for road crash victims. An amber or white light will shine on all Monaghan County Council public buildings while people are also invited to shine a light in their front windows of the evening.

A special remembrance mass will also be broadcast live on RTE 1 TV this Sunday at 11am.

A renewed focus for World Day of Remembrance this year is on the victims of serious injuries and their families. 24,663 people have died on our roads since we began recording fatalities in 1959. Since 1977, when injury records began, 84,977 people have been seriously injured.

Provisional figures show that 119 people have been killed on Irish roads as at 18^th November 2021 which represents a decrease of 16 deaths compared to the same date last year.
