We need to Stop the Spread of Covid-19

The incidence rate of COVID19 in counties of Cavan and Monaghan has come down in recent weeks and we wish to thank the communities of Cavan and Monaghan for all their hard work and efforts in working together to reduce the number of cases.

As the country has moved from level 5 to level 3 restrictions it is more important now than ever that we continue to build upon this good work.  It is difficult but we need to keep up our guard, play our part and work with our families and communities to stop the spread of Covid-19.

In the last 14 days to the 29th of November there were:

• 56 new positive cases in Cavan and 48 new positive cases in Monaghan
• The 14-Day incidence rate of Covid-19 nationally now stands at 92.3 cases per 100,000 of the population. For Cavan this rate is 7 and Monaghan it is 83.1 cases per 100,000.

 

The HSE’s hospital and community services in Cavan and Monaghan County Council and An Garda Síochána are working together through emergency management structures to co-ordinate the community response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Today they are issuing an urgent appeal to the citizens of Cavan and Monaghan to continue to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Dr Augustine Pereira, Director of Public Health in the North East stated

“As we move out of level 5 into level 3 restrictions and we prepare for Christmas, I would urge everyone to go about their daily lives in a safe manner. Please make sure you social distance, wear a face covering and wash your hands and follow coughing or sneezing etiquettes. We know these measures work”.

“Please also prioritise who you plan to meet as this is our first winter with Covid and the risks of transmission in winter months are high. Until we have a vaccine and better protection of our vulnerable population, we cannot afford to let our guard down.”   

Chief Superintendent for the Monaghan Garda Division, Aidan Glacken said “An Garda Síochána are appealing to the public over the next number of weeks to stay at home unless their journey is absolutely essential. We are asking the public to drive down the virus by thinking twice before driving for non-essential purposes.”

The Chief Executive of Monaghan County Council Eamonn O’Sullivan said “This is a very difficult time for everyone, we need to get the virus under control. If anyone needs assistance, I would ask them to call the Covid 19 Community Helpline.  We can get through this together, if we all do our part and adhere to the guidelines.”

Monaghan County Council Update on Service Provision

In line with Government guidelines, regarding the end of Level 5 restrictions, Monaghan County Council wish to advise that from Tuesday 1^st December Monaghan County Council Motor Tax, Library, Museum and Arts services will re-open to the public.

Motor Tax: Our Motor Tax service is open to the public and vehicles can be taxed during open hours 9.30 am – 12.30 pm.  Other options for taxing your vehicle include ‘Drop off forms’ for Motor Tax renewal, first time taxing, taxing of Goods Vehicles, Trailers  which may be left in Motor Tax post box or posted to Monaghan Motor Tax, Market Street, Monaghan or online at motortax.ie  – except first time commercial/goods vehicles and trailers.

Libraries: From today our three larger branch libraries, Monaghan, Carrickmacross and Clones are open for browsing.

Opening hours are;

Monday 11am to 1pm, 2pm to 5pm & 6pm to 8pm

Tuesday 11am to 1pm & 2pm to 5pm

Wednesday 11am to 1pm & 2pm to 5pm

Thursday 11am to 1pm & 2pm to 5pm

Friday 11am to 1pm & 2pm to 5pm

 

All Libraries, including Ballybay and Castleblayney branches that remain closed, will continue to offer a Home Delivery Option as well as a ‘Contact & Collect’ option for those who prefer to limit their social contacts or feel uneasy visiting the library buildings. You can avail of this service by contacting your local branch.

Arts: The Markethouse will be open to the public for the Christmas Craft Fair from the 5^th December during the hours of 11am and 6pm.  The Markethouse office will be open Monday – Friday from 9am until 1pm.

 

Members of the public are asked to co-operate with the queuing systems in operation and to wear a face covering at all times.

The recently opened Patrick Kavanagh Centre in Monaghan has triumphed in the Film and Video category at the Heritage in Motion Awards 2020.

 

A joint initiative of the European Museum Academy and Europa Nostra, the Awards are a celebration of the best examples of innovative multimedia and digital projects in cultural heritage in Europe. This year’s winners were announced at an online ceremony on 20^th November, 2020.

 

The Patrick Kavanagh Centre is set in a deconsecrated early 19^th century church in the poet’s hometown of Inniskeen, and was designed by Martello Media, in association with MakeDot, to work as a museum, resource centre, cinema and performance space.

 

The centre re-opened in July this year, following a €1m restoration, and tells the story of one of the best-loved poets of the 20^th century, through an immersive, multimedia experience. The award has been given to the centrepiece of the exhibition, a triple-projection titled ‘The Pincer Jaws of Heaven’, designed to “envelop visitors with a cinematic flying journey”, and connect them with the raw power of Kavanagh’s words, and the landscapes that inspired them; key works are read by Kavanagh, plus an eclectic selection of local friends and fellow poets including Oliver Callan and John McArdle.

 

Speaking of the win, Brian O’Flynn Head of Ireland’s Ancient East, said: “Failte Ireland is delighted to see the creative team behind ‘The Pincer Jaws of Heaven’ recognised for their work with a Heritage in Motion award for best Film and Video. Fáilte Ireland proudly contributed over €200,000 to the restoration of the Patrick Kavanagh Centre in Ireland’s Ancient East.  ‘The Pincer Jaws of Heaven’ with its innovative combination of cultural heritage, creativity and technology truly captures the essence of Patrick Kavanagh and the rural landscape which inspired his poetry.”

 

Eamonn O’Sullivan, Chief Executive of Monaghan County Council warmly congratulated all involved: “It is a beautifully directed film which perfectly captures the atmosphere and tone of Patrick Kavanagh’s wonderful poetry.  As the centrepiece of the Patrick Kavanagh visitor experience, the film has been acclaimed by visitors young and old.”

 

Meanwhile, Councillor & Cathaoirleach, Colm Carthy, paid tribute to the innovative project team that delivered the film: “It is fantastic to see a small rural project sharing the same award stage as internationally renowned museums such as the Victoria & Albert museum in London,” he said.

Following the huge interest back at the beginning of 2020 the local Tidy Town Committee decided to host a national seminar in the town and invite the various interested groups to hear their story so far. As we all know, Covid 19 emerged so the seminar had to be postponed to a later date. The current situation led to the committee deciding to host a national online seminar/webinar for all those who had been looking for information on the project so they could hear the Carrickmacross story and learn from it and possibly proceed with their own projects. That seminar is now scheduled for next Wednesday 11^th November at 7.30 pm and the local committee is inviting anyone in the local community to participate. There is no charge. All you have to do is register online using the code below.

 Options are as follows: 

1. Call the office at 047 81175 (press 0) to make an appointment. Office open hours 9.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m.

2. Motor Tax renewal, first time taxing, taxing of Goods Vehicles, Trailers etc may be left in Motor Tax post box or posted to Monaghan Motor Tax, Market Street, Monaghan.
