Warm Air Does Not Mean Warm Water. Advice to reduce your drowning risk.

WATER-SAFETY-IRELAND-LOGOWater Safety Ireland is cautioning people not to underestimate the dangers of swimming in cold water. The caution comes as air temperatures rise however water temperatures are still cold. Swimming in cold water can result in the rapid cooling of muscles needed to swim and stay afloat. Swim within your depth, swim briefly and be mindful that any cooling of the muscles can make it more difficult to swim safely.

Advice to reduce your drowning risk:

  1. Swim within your depth, stay within your depth and enter the water slowly to acclimatize as sudden immersion in cold water can result in “cold shock” which can lead to deep gasping, uncontrollable rapid breathing and panic.
  2. Swim at Lifeguarded waterways this weekend – locations at https://watersafety.ie/lifeguards/.
  3.  If you cannot get to a lifeguarded waterway, swim in areas that are traditionally known to be safe and have ringbuoys available for rescues.
  4.  Never use inflatable toys in open water as they can be swept away by currents and offshore breezes.
  5. Children require close, uninterrupted, adult supervision at all times near water.
  6.  Swim within your depth and stay within your depth. Make sure that the edges are shallow shelving so that you can safely and easily enter and exit the water.
  7. To escape a rip current, swim parallel to the shore and then swim back ashore. See www.watersafety.ie/rip-currents/
  8. Never swim in quarries or reservoirs.
  9. Alcohol is a factor in one third of drownings – never mix alcohol with water activities.
  10. Beware of stranding by incoming tides. Carry a charged phone at all times and in an emergency, call 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
  11. Always wear a correctly fitting lifejacket when boating and have a means of communication in a waterproof pouch.
    1.  If you see somebody in trouble in the water: SHOUT – REACH – THROW
      a. SHOUT to calm, encourage and orientate them;
      b. REACH with anything that prevents you from entering the water (clothing/stick);
      c. THROW a ringbuoy or any floating object to them.

Know The Lifeguard Flags:
No Lifeguard flag means that there is no Lifeguard on duty. A red flag means that a Lifeguard is on duty but has deemed conditions to be too unsafe to swim. The red and yellow flags mean a Lifeguard is on duty and the Lifeguard is patrolling between those flags.

Attention all dog owners! Lambing season

There are lots of lambs in the fields.

Every year in Monaghan, there are many attacks on sheep by dogs, particularly around lambing time.

These attacks cause great cruelty to sheep and lambs.

These attacks result in serious losses for the farmer.

Any dog, large or small, may become involved in attacking sheep – MAKE SURE YOUR DOG DOESN’T GET THE CHANCE!

If you own a dog or dogs, you are required to:

  • Keep your dog under control at all times. This means not allowing your dog off your property unaccompanied.
  • Have a microchip certificate of registration which proves that your dog is microchipped and registered to you. (Required since 2016)
  • Ensure that every dog under your control wears a collar bearing the name and address of the owner at all times and that the name and address are legible.
  • Have a current licence for each dog in your possession or a general dog licence to cover all dogs in your possession. YOU CAN NOW BUY YOUR DOG LICENCE ONLINE AT monaghan.ie

End Of An Era As Monaghan County Museum Closes Its Doors On Hill Street

New Museum At The Peace Campus To Open In Early 2024

Monaghan County Museum will close at its current home on Hill Street on International Museums Day, May 18th this year.

This will be a last chance to see the exhibits at Hill Street – the Museum’s home for the past 40 years – before the facility moves to a new, purpose-built premises at the Peace Campus in early 2024.

The First Professionally Run Local Authority Museum in Ireland

Monaghan County Museum earned its place in the history books by being the first local authority museum in Ireland to be run by paid, full-time staff when it opened in September 1974.

It was a bold statement from Monaghan County Council that they were looking to the future and recognised the importance of preserving and exploring the rich culture and history of the county and surrounding region,” said the Museum’s curator, Liam Bradley.

“Despite the backdrop of the troubles and shock of the devastating Monaghan bombing which had taken place just a few months prior, here was a service that was open to all. A safe space where people from all backgrounds could come and discover a shared history,” he added.

The Museum was originally housed in the Courthouse, before a fire in the building prompted a move to the Hill Street location.

Over the decades that followed, the Museum’s collection grew to reflect the cultural diversity and historical richness of the county. Each object tells a story, of a person, a place, a passion, a life lived, and lives lost.

Exciting Times Ahead As Museum At The Peace Campus Opens

The ambitions of the service and the wealth and breadth of the stories which the collection holds needed a bigger and more accessible space to reach an even wider audience. That new space is the Peace Campus building, currently under construction on Plantation Road in Monaghan Town.

It is hoped that the building will be completed by November 2023, and the Museum reopened to the public in early 2024.

Monaghan County Museum is about you, it is for you. Monaghan County Museum on Hill Street will soon become part of the history of the county, why not come in and be part of that history before we move to the future Monaghan County Museum at the Peace Campus.” Bradley concluded.
