Monaghan County Council is delighted to let you know that Monaghan will feature on RTE 1 this Friday at 7.30pm.

Tracks & Trails returns for its 11th Season and this season features our own ‘Monaghan Way’

This inspirational series epitomises what is best about our wild and natural landscapes with presenters taking us on a journey along some of the most beautiful trails on the Island of Ireland. The presenters get a chance to link their passions along the trails that they discover.

In episode 3 this Friday 19^th April at 7.30pm on RTE 1, Irish Historian and Broadcaster, Professor Diarmaid Ferriter travels to Ulster to complete two trails on either side of the border, one in the Sperrin mountain range in Co. Tyrone and the other along the scenic Monaghan Way.

His first walk is a 12km loop in the Gortin Glen close to Omagh.

Diarmaid then travels to Co. Monaghan to Kavanagh Country. His walk begins at the Patrick Kavanagh Centre in Inniskeen where he meets the manager, Darren McCreesh who shares Diarmaid’s love and knowledge of the life and work of Kavanagh.

This walk follows a trail for 18.5km along the recently upgraded Monaghan Way and is a combination of quiet country roads, cross country trails and riverside and lakeside approaches. Wanting to see first-hand the landscapes that inspired the poet and writer Diarmaid enjoys the time he has here with Kavanagh’s words and spirit. This is a varied walk and to complete this journey Diarmaid crosses fields, disused railway lines and quiet roads to end at beautiful Loch Muckno where he feels he has seen the essence of the place that inspired Patrick Kavanagh.

 It is now your responsibility to ensure that you’re registered to vote.

If you are not registered to vote, please submit your application on or before the closing date:

To be eligible to vote:

• You must be 18 years of age on or before 7^th June 2024;
• You must be living full time at the address at which you wish to be registered;
• To be eligible to vote in the European Parliamentary Elections you must be
• an Irish citizen OR
• a citizen of another EU Member State (subject to completing EP1 form which guards against double voting across the EU – please contact us if you have not received your EP1 form in the post)

WON’T BE ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE POLLING STATION ON POLLING DAY?

If your illness or disability or the circumstances of your occupation or study is preventing you from attending a polling station on polling day, you may be entitled to vote by post.

If you had an illness/disability postal vote for the Referendum in March 2024, there is no need to re-apply.

The Department of Public Health HSE Dublin and North East wishes to advise members of the public about the risk of measles infection to non-immune individuals in the Dublin and North East region.

Since the beginning of March a number of confirmed measles cases have been notified to Public Health HSE Dublin and North East. In view of these cases occurring in this short period of time there is a risk of on-going community spread.

Following a recent notification of a confirmed measles case in the Dublin 15 area we wish to advise that members of the public may have been exposed to measles while:

• Attending Ship Shape Kids Play Junction 6 Castleknock on the afternoon of 4^th April 2024

Action needed:

1. Be aware of signs and symptoms of measles for 21 days (i.e. 25^th April 2024) from the time of possible exposure.

Measles is a highly infectious disease that can cause serious complications, particularly in children under one year of age, pregnant women, and the immunosuppressed. If you are in one of these groups, please seek advice from your GP.

If you or your child was at Ship Shape Kids Play on that afternoon, it is especially important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of measles, which include:

• Cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing and a cough
• Sore red eyes
• A temperature of 38 degrees Celsius or above
• Rash, which usually appears on head and neck first and spreads to rest of body

If you have these symptoms, please seek medical advice. Phone ahead prior to attending any healthcare setting to let them know that you have these symptoms, so they can make necessary arrangements.

1. Ensure you are vaccinated.

If you/your child are not vaccinated against measles with two doses of MMR, please contact your GP as soon as possible during normal working hours to discuss whether you require vaccination.

If you were born in Ireland before 1978 or had measles illness, you are unlikely to require vaccination, as you are probably immune.

The best way to protect yourself and those around you against measles is by MMR vaccination. This can be arranged free of charge with your GP (focus on children) or in the HSE vaccination clinics for children (over the age of 5 years) and adults for whom vaccination is indicated– the times and locations are listed on the following web link:  MMR vaccine Catch-up Programme – HSE.ie

Children should receive their first dose of MMR vaccine at one year of age and a second dose in junior infants at 4-5 years of age.
