Sally Denver Matthews – Mammy Matinee.  11th January – Clones Courthouse at 10.30am

First Fortnight in Clones EDIC

Join us for a wonderful production of Sally Denver Matthews a one woman show about the first few months of motherhood.  A Mammy Matinee means you can bring your baby with you and no one will mind if the baby cries (they’re meant to)!  This show is not for your baby (they won’t understand it, it’s sophisticated), it’s for you, the parents! Yes, dads are welcome too (‘Daddy Matinees’ just didn’t have the same ring to it…). And if you don’t have a baby, you’ll still love the show!

Sally Denver Matthews

Sally + Stephen + 2 bottles of Malbec = Heidi.

Heidi has only been around for 6 months, but she is already in charge.

Sally adores her new baby, but she misses her old life when she only had herself to worry about. Her new life as a mother is overwhelming and it feels like there’s no time to talk to Stephen. At least Sally still gets to see her friends (in photos) and still gets to wash her hair (but not condition it). Mum, mam, madre, mutter, moeder… whatever you go by, it’s the most difficult job you’ll ever have!

Bookings at 047 74712 or cloneslibrary@monaghancoco.ie

Cavan Monaghan Science Festival Family Fun Day Saturday November 24th in Monaghan Institute

Cavan Monaghan Science Festival Family Fun Day Saturday November 24th in Monaghan Institute

Cavan Monaghan Science Festival Family Fun Day Saturday November 24th in Monaghan Institute

Cavan Monaghan Science Festival has got off to a sensational start. In the first week of the festival, over 5000 people – young, old and in between – have already enjoyed the various events – and we’re only halfway through the Festival.

“The appetite for this Festival is truly amazing”, comments Deirdriú McQuaid of the Festival Committee. “National Science Week actually runs from 11th – 18th November but the level of interest in the Festival locally is such that our two county event has become a Science Fortnight, with events throughout the two counties running from 10th – 24th November”.

Exciting experiments are being carried out and discoveries made in libraries, museums and classroom throughout the counties as the Festival’s extensive school programme rolls out. In county Monaghan, approximately 160 workshops are being facilitated over the two weeks with a further 40 events for the general public.

“Whilst the Science Festival is great fun and includes lots of free entertainment, the main objective of the Science Festival and National Science Week is a serious one” explains Deirdriú. “By  stimulating an interest in and increasing awareness of the relevance of the STEAM subjects in our everyday lives, we hope to increase the engagement of pupils and students in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. There is currently a shortfall of skills in these key areas and the current and future opportunities are massive.”

To finish off the festival in County Monaghan, we have a fun packed educational day awaits everyone at our Family Fun Day on Saturday 24th November 12-5pm in Monaghan Institute, Armagh Rd, Monaghan. We have some of the best national and international scientists, creators and artists who will take you on a new road of discovery with hands on activities, workshops, shows, demonstrations, performances, exhibitions and build it make it area. We will also do demonstrations using real size dummies which will also show where you can end up when you are not using your seatbelt.

The shuttle uses the latest simulations and immersive technologies this experience aims to raise awareness around killer behaviours such as speeding, driver distraction, driver fatigue, driving under the influence of alcohol, and many other issues. Test your driving skills and reaction time on the car simulators and break reaction timer. Try to avoid distractions in busy city traffic or stay awake on a late night drive in the virtual reality simulators.

Cavan Monaghan Science Festival

Cavan Monaghan Science Festival 2018

Welcome to the Cavan Monaghan Science Festival  – an award winning regional festival celebrating, exploring and promoting the wonders of science, technology, engineering, arts and maths in our everyday lives.

The festival was 4th in the country for the number of events being provided for the community and that is behind Dublin, Galway and Cork! So we say, well done us and everyone involved! The festival won the Chambers Ireland Best Local Authority Collaborative Award at the end of 2017.

So we are celebrating our 5th birthday this year! And we will be celebrating for 15 days with a fantastic line up of events for everyone to get involved in. Watch out for an explosion of STEAM in the Monaghan Cavan air over the two weeks. The two counties will be showered in 200+ free, fun and educational events from the 7th – 21st November 2020.

So Why A Science Festival?
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths are of key importance in our everyday lives. Take for instance Agri-science – this is core to the lives and livelihoods of a significant majority of both counties’ populations. It is also becoming increasingly apparent that the whole range of STEAM skills are key to industrial and entrepreneurial innovation in this border area. Monaghan town for example hosts the Global Headquarters of Combilift, the acknowledged global leader in the long-load handling market which exports its products to 75 countries throughout the world. “Innovation creates jobs, jobs create prosperity, the development of new business opportunities and the sustainability of our local communities”, comments Deirdriú McQuaid, Coordinator of Cavan Monaghan Science Festival.

“To nurture and exploit such opportunities, and to preserve the integrity of the rural environment, we must promote relevant skills” adds Karen McCague. One of the objectives of the Cavan Monaghan Science Festival is to create awareness among the young, and not so young, of the reality and importance of STEAM in our lives in a relaxed, informal way. “Through a series of fun, educational and entertaining events we hope to encourage children to engage in the STEAM subjects from an early age. Participation in the Festival will inform and whet young appetites for learning, enrich their lives and open up significant career and business options for them at a later stage”, comments Deirdriú.

The Programme:

We are currently working on an exciting programme for 2020 so watch this space!
