Summer Programme 2018 @ Monaghan Libraries

This summer we have created an exciting fun and interactive programme of activities for children and young people taking place in our libraries across the county. From making butterflies from old books, to robotic, paper circuits and makey makey workshops or perhaps relax with a yoga storytelling session or head down to the woods for a teddy bear’s picnic.

As always, the summer programme of events is FREE of charge, but booking is required. Contact your local library to book. In order to facilitate as many children as possible, a limit of 2 workshops per child can be booked. You may put your name on a waiting list for other workshops should free spaces become available.

Summer Stars @ Your Local Library

Summer Stars is an exciting reading-based programme which is available free of charge to all children across the country. It will run during July & August in Monaghan Libraries, and children are invited to register at their local library and being part of the adventure. All participants will be given a Summer Stars Reading Card to record and track their own progress. There will be rewards and incentives along the way and a grand finale at the end for all participants.

Everyone is invited to check out the online resource at www.summerstars.ie which has lots of online games and activities as well as a range of animated ebooks. You will find a children’s books discussion board and interviews with well-known people about their favourite books. There are helpful tips for reading and recommended titles by age group.

And remember it’s all FREE!

Why Participate in the Summer Stars?

It is important to continue reading during the summer months. There is a lot of research which shows that children who read over the summer maintain their reading levels and return to school more prepared for the new school year. Reading also helps to develop creativity and the imagination. It’s a fun and calming activity that will improve concentration and communication skills.

The best way to pick out books to read is to make it FUN!

Find a book that you will really like
Understand the story by looking at the words or reading a page
Narrow your search by choosing books about something that you are interested in

Of course there is a lot more to libraries than books. We offer comics, graphic novels, magazines, DVD’s, CD’s, story times, fun reading events, reading clubs, activities, games, computers and internet access, and study space.

So what are you waiting for, get down to your local library in Monaghan and become a Summer Star….

Because everything changes when we read!

DEAR Day 2018 – Friday 27th April at 12 noon

What is Drop Everything and Read (DEAR)?

The entire nation is invited to take time out and to ‘Drop Everything and Read’ for 20 minutes at 12 noon on Friday April 27th 2018.

The simple but very effective idea is to promote the importance of literacy and reading for pleasure by having as many people as possible read at the same time on the same day.

Work will be put down, computer screens will be turned off, and everyone will be encouraged to pick up a book, magazine, newspaper, e-book, audio book, etc. and to read quietly, or indeed be read to, for 20 minutes.

The main focus of this national DEAR challenge is to draw attention to the importance of reading for pleasure. If reading is to become a lifelong habit then young people must see themselves as participants in a community that views reading as a significant and enjoyable activity.

We here at Monaghan County Library Services are encouraging as many people to ‘Drop’ everything for just a few minutes and simply read. Why not drop into your local library in Monaghan and borrow that book, magazine, audiobook or go online to download an ebook to read on the day.

Want to bring your group or class to the library for a visit – just contact your local in advance to book. Contact details for libraries can be found at https://monaghan.ie/library/branch-locator/

Email photos of your group/class reading on the day to us at moncolib@monaghancoco.ie to include in publicity and report.

For more information on DEAR Day and to register your school, group go to http://www.jcsp.ie/
