Dublin, 8 November 2019: The Irish Exporters Association, the voice of the Export Industry in Ireland, on Friday night announced the winners of the 2019 Export Industry Awards. Silver Hill Duck, Combilift & Entekra all scooped awards in their respective categories making it a clean sweep for Monaghan-based companies. With 12 high-profile companies winning awards across the 12 categories, this year saw one of the most competitive processes in the Awards’ history. Now in its 19th year, the Irish Exporters Association’s Export Industry Awards is the premier event for recognising the achievements of Irish Exporters. The black-tie Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner was attended by 500 export industry professionals, local and international dignitaries and was moderated by PJ Gallagher.

Silver Hill Duck won Food & Drink Exporter of the Year. Founded over 55 years ago Silver Hill currently export its premium duck & duck products to over 24 countries around the world from its base in Emyvale, Co. Monaghan. The business is 70% export led with the UK, Holland, Germany, Singapore & Hong Kong listed as just some of their growth markets. This growth has led to the creation of 80 new jobs since 2013 to bring the total to 240 employees, and the addition of 24 contract farmers north and south of the border. Managing Director Micheál Briody stated “Silver Hill Duck pride ourselves on being a strong export oriented company so it is especially rewarding to win this prestigious IEA award for our hard working team. Our success in international markets especially Asia gives us great confidence that our unique duck is indeed the best Peking Duck in the world and will ensure we continue to endeavour to gain larger market share in those markets in the coming months and years”

Entekra scooped the prestigious Services Exporter of The Year beating stiff competition from other export companies such as Ardmac in Dublin & Wisetek based in Co. Cork. Founded in late 2016, Entekra set out to transform how houses are built in the United States with its Fully Integrated Off-Site Solution™ (FIOSS™). The Technical staff located at the company’s new European headquarters in Monaghan Town oversees the critical Design and Engineering phase for every structure that is manufactured at its U.S. factory in Northern California. Given demand for Entekra’s services from America’s largest home builders, the number of employees based in Ireland, which is currently 40, is forecasted to rise to 200. CFO of Entekra Ireland Michael Treanor was delighted with the announcement. “Entekra has made significant inroads introducing FIOSS to the U.S. market as a technologically advanced approach to more rapidly build higher-quality homes. We are honoured to receive this award as it is a testament to the commitment of all our employees on both sides of the Atlantic to provide outstanding service to our customers.”

Developing a Digital Roadmap for Monaghan

Monaghan County Council seeking the views of citizens and business people

At present, Monaghan Co. Co. is working to develop a Digital Strategy for County Monaghan. This strategy will set out the actions needed to develop Monaghan as an area of digital expertise at local and county level and ultimately to make Monaghan a more attractive and efficient place for conducting business, especially digital business.

In the coming days, digital surveys will available on the Monaghan County Council website and through social media forums seeking your views on what needs to be done to help develop County Monaghan as a digital county.

Earlier in the year, Market Dynamics Ltd. from Kilkenny were appointed as consultants for this project, with John Gilsenan leading this research. As a native of Monaghan, John is already familiar with many aspects of life in Monaghan at first hand and can identify many of the barriers to digital development within the county.

Ultimately the objective is to see the development of higher levels of digital skills within the county, leading to increased employment in areas requiring digital expertise and skills in Information Technology. John Gilsenan from Market Dynamics has already been engaging with many of the key stakeholders, conducting meetings and interviews with many people in the business community. In the coming weeks, it is intended to gather the views of a greater number of people with online surveys looking for input from citizens, business people and the voluntary sector.

These three different surveys are being made available digitally and the citizen survey will also be available to complete in paper format through our public libraries. These questionnaires will also be distributed to community and voluntary groups through the Public Participation Network(PPN), seeking to take on board the views of all voluntary organisations and identify their specific needs at local level. It is expected that further public consultations will also take place in the coming months for groups and individuals in central locations within the county.

The Digital Strategy will focus on how Monaghan can develop more skills in STEM subjects and Information Technology. This will be a multi-agency document with actions and objectives defined at local and national level for a number of the key stakeholders within the economic, education, local government and voluntary sectors. The digital strategy is being completed under the auspices of Monaghan County Council broadband officer, John McArdle.

It is intended that this document will build on research completed by Indecon economic consultants in 2018 at national level on behalf of Department of Rural and Community Development which culminated in a Digital Readiness Assessment for each local authority. This identified some of the challenges faced within Monaghan from a digital perspective. It is anticipated that the development of this digital strategy will identify some of the key steps needed to develop digital directions within the county and to act as a driver towards achieving these.

Please visit Monaghan Co. Co. website for further details and to access the survey https://monaghan.ie/monaghan-council/
