We are delighted to let you know that Summer Stars 2020 is ready to go in Libraries across Co. Monaghan. You can arrange to pick up your Reading Challenge Card from today in Carrickmacross, Clones and Monaghan Branch Libraries. They will be available in Castleblayney and Ballybay next week.

Library ‘Summer Stars’ Reading Programme Moves Online
Bestselling author Judi Curtin calls on children to join the reading adventure at home and online
Children and families across Ireland are invited to take part in this year’s Summer Stars reading programme, running across Monaghan from July 1st until the end of August.
Bestselling author Judi Curtin has encouraged all children to take part and enjoy a summer full of imagination, saying: “I am delighted to support Summer Stars 2020 Reading Adventure, a fantastic initiative from Libraries Ireland.”
This year, libraries have come up with creative new ways for young readers to access the programme online.
Children can track their reading progress on reading cards to be marked each time a book is read, online or in print form. Readers can also upload reviews of their favourite books and share with the reading community at summerstars.ie.
Where possible, libraries will provide Summer Stars physical book lending services to children as they continue a phased re-opening. Library staff will also host online author visits, Creative writing challenges, quizzes and more over the summer – stay tuned to your local library service social media pages for more information!
Tom Enright, Wexford County Council Chief Executive and Chair of the Libraries Development Committee said:
“The Summer Stars programme is all about finding fun in reading and getting young imaginations active. Things are a little different this year, given the Covid-19 restrictions, but we are delighted that libraries have been able to adapt and move the programme online so that children can enjoy the Summer Stars adventure at home. With children out of school for a number of months now, this programme will not only help to maintain and improve their literacy and reading skills, but will give busy parents another new option to keep the kids entertained over the summer.”
Michael Ring TD, the Minister for Rural and Community Development, whose Department has responsibility for public libraries, said:
“I am delighted that in the midst of the current restrictions the libraries are still engaging with children and not only keeping them entertained with all the online content, but also helping them keep their reading skills up. I am confident that again this year the Summer Stars Reading Programme will be a big success across the country.
The libraries have done a fantastic job preparing to deliver this programme online and I am sure the children will enjoy accessing the wonderful range of eBooks which has been boosted by recent investments by my Department. Summer Stars, which is part of the Right to Read Programme, is extremely important for children’s reading development and will equip them with skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. I would encourage everybody to make sure their children and grandchildren participate in this programme.”

Public Libraries are due to begin offering more services to the public as outlined in Phase 2 of the Government’s Roadmap for Reopening Society and Business. However, it will be some time before full library services can resume.
Our first priority will be to make arrangements for a safe lending & return service via a ‘Contact and Collect’ type model.
This means that at first, library spaces will be restricted to library staff only and will not be accessible to the public. Instead, you can contact Clones, Carrickmacross or Monaghan branch libraries by phone. Please have your Library card details to hand when calling. If you have specific requests let us know, otherwise you can chat with the librarian about what you like to read in general and they will choose a selection of titles based on your/your children’s preferences. When you call you will be given a designated time at which to collect your order. Please ONLY come at your designated time so as we can avoid multiple people gathering at the library doors. It is imperative that you keep a safe social distance from Library staff and other users. You are welcome to return books during your visit but you will be asked to place them in a returns box rather than handing them to Library staff. We thank you for your understanding and co-operation during this period of phased re-opening.
As the government roadmap progresses, the library sector will plan a gradual re-opening aligned to health and safety directives. But over time, and with caution and care, we will begin to re-open our buildings to the public.
In all situations, the health and safety of library users and staff will be paramount. Social distancing will be observed where library users interact with services, and all health and safety protocols will be observed.
You can continue to use your library online!
Don’t forget, you can access library services online, and these online services will continue to be available as we move through the re-opening phases. You can:
• join the library online;
• download eBooks and eAudiobooks;
• read magazines and newspapers
• take eLearning or language courses;
• watch or listen to storytimes; or,
• take part in other activities like virtual author visits & other webinar events.
Keep Free Saturday 13th June for a day full of creativity for Children & Young People
For 2020 Cruinniú na nÓg will be going online and virtual! Over the past 2 years Cruinniú na nÓg has become a key point in the calendar for children and young people to try something creative, develop an appetite for discovery and acquire new skills – and 2020 will be no different! Everyone is invited to celebrate our culture and creativity and to take part in the virtual Cruinniú na nÓg on Saturday 13th June 2020. In partnership with RTÉ and Local Authorities, the Creative Ireland Programme is urging children and young people to answer the call, to get creative at home and be ready to showcase their creative talents on Saturday 13th June. We have developed a number of creative, cultural and engaging “calls to action” which children, young people – indeed entire families – can create in their own homes and gardens on Saturday 13th June. Our programme will run on the Cavan Monaghan Creative Youth Youtube Channel from 10am-4.30pm with a full packed programme for all ages to enjoy.

It’s coming into Silage Season with lots of Tractors and machinery on the Farm and on the Roads. Help your children learn about Farm safety with the characters from Riverside Farm and author Alma Jordan. Time to get Creative with Clones EU Direct! This week we will be travelling across Europe to meet Snow White from Germany, Dracula from Romania, The Little Mermaid from Denmark, Quasimodo from France and Cú Chulainn from Ireland. Learn how to draw each of these characters, find out about the country they are from and send a picture of your work to cloneslibary@monaghancoco.ie to win a €50 voucher to replenish your art supplies.
